According to yahoo sports, the Spurs want to trade Parker to move up in the draft. Who in the hell could they possibly get?

not shocking. i don't want him to leave, but i'm fine with it if the spurs get something decent out of it.

That's just it. Who would be available from #5 on, who would make it worthwhile? It sounds like it's partially a financial move.

a couple of picks and TP's cap room would be more than enough. it doesn't have to be a player already in the league.

Kings seem pretty interested and they have a need...but even though the Spurs are old its not like lottery picks are a sure thing. At five they aren't necessarily going to get great talent.

If you are going to rebuild, it doesn't make sense to trade the youngest of your big 3. If you are going to trade someone to get younger, why not Ginobli?

I guess you have Hill waiting in the wings at PG, but still...

I think Hill is going to be very solid as a starter. I've always wondered how much Parker wants to be around anyhow. And his performance against Memphis was not endearing.

My thoughts are this: Pop needs veterans around. That's just the way he is. Duncan will only play a couple more years, probably the same with Ginobili. So their salaries will come off the books fairly soon, yet they are still good at their positions.
Why not try to become more youthful at the same time? Parker is still solid and in his prime, but with probably only 2-3 more "dominant" years left in him. After that his speed will start to go but he will still command a large salary.

In a backwards sort of way, this could be considered a "rebuilding" move, assuming Duncan and Ginobili aren't long for the league and will take paycuts in the future.

Now they are saying that the trade to the Kings would include Casspi and the 7th pick...interesting.

Not to hijack but the Suns are looking to deal Nash to Minnesota as well. Definitely a sign of the changing times.

Maybe the Mavericks will trade JJ Barea and their 1st and 2nd picks for Parker?

If you have a chance to trade your Hall of Fame Franchise Player still in his prime for the 7th pick in a 2 player draft you have to consider it.

Tangent, but how perfect of a fit would Ricky Rubio be in San Antonio?

I disagree, especially if Casspi is involved. He's a moldable young guy with good size, good hands and decent ball-handling skills.

I don't think anyone would be for this if George Hill wasn't waiting in the wings at PG. The Spurs can entirely revamp their roster in the next 5 years and all the while make room for a FA or two.

And who knows, maybe Pop and RC have identified a lottery player who has more up-side than what he's being given credit for.

According to realgm, the Spurs are looking to trade into the lottery for Jonas Valanciunas, a 18 year old 6'10'' power forward from Lithuania.

Also, RC just came out and said that the Spurs aren't shopping Parker, but are taking calls on a lot of their players. So, not sure what to make of that. There are other reports of the Spurs wanting to include RJ in a package with Parker. But if that's the case, a trade isn't very likely.

As Chris Quinn's backup? Like a glove.

The various rumors sound like they're trying to unload at least one of the PGs. If it's a high pick, Tony, 10 or later, Hill.

Now George Hill rumors are heating up. The Rockets reportedly offered their 14th and 23rd picks for him.

I understand moving TP, but what's the rationale with Hill?

Spend three long years molding him, then ship him out for a prospect and start over? Is he expected to bolt when his contract expires or what?

Yea, I would hate to give up hill. He has great value.

He becomes a restricted free agent next summer. I don't think he has any plans of leaving.

Isn't Hill a free agent next year? If so, I can see the justification for shipping him as it will cost too much to keep both him and Tony around.

Hill is restricted at the end of next season, so to me it would make more sense to wait until the end of next season in order to make any trades involving Hill / Parker....unless you get an established PF / C in return.

Otherwise, trading one of them for projects or "rookie reaches" signals that the organization has completely given up on Duncan's 5th ring.

I wouldn't trade Parker for less than Derrick Williams. That'd be Minny at number two, which is obviously was Phx is looking for.

How great would it be for Minn to trade for a veteran PG even though they'll have Flinn and Rubio on the roster next year (barring a trade).

I'm looking forward to the day when Minnesota has Kevin Love, Michael Beasley, and 13 point guards.

RE Parker... he has the most trade value, doesn't play very good defense, vanished in the playoffs this year, and maybe most importantly there are a lot of rumors that he wants to leave.

I still like Hill, as I think he is a well-rounded, quality starter at PG. That makes it easier to trade Parker; guard is not the Spurs biggest need. A small forward and post are what the Spurs really need.

On the way into work, I was listening to Mike and Mike and they had one of ESPN's "Basketball Experts" on. Sorry, can't remember which one. Anyways, he said it is much more likely the Spurs trade Hill than Parker.
Ulrich

I'll be sad if they do that. He seems like a good guy and a very solid player who could easily average 20 a game while playing good defense.

If you package Tony with Jefferson, Tony's trade value is significantly diminished. If Tony wanted out, he would not have extended.

quote:
The Spurs are shopping Tony Parker and HOOPSWORLD reports a deal that would have sent him to Portland fell through on Wednesday night.

Alex Kennedy writes: "San Antonio was prepared to ship Tony Parker and No. 29 to Portland in exchange for Andre Miller, Nicolas Batum and the No. 21 pick. Other players would have been added in order to make salaries work. However, the deal died when the Spurs insisted that Richard Jefferson be included in the talks."

Jefferson has three years and about $30.5 remaining on his contract. The Spurs reportedly will only deal Parker if a team is willing to take Jefferson, too.

Parker said once again on Wednesday that he wants to stay with the Spurs.

If the spurs insist on making rj part of the trade, than there will be no trade.
