I have to admit, I am siding more with the owners in this lockout while for the NFL lockout, I side more with the players.

What are the rules for working out with the team/player-coach interaction etc.? I assume the players can still get together and practice without the coaches.

Could be good for Leonard and Bertans to get a season with NBA players before they are asked to perform.

The NFL lockout is a bunch of BS.

NFL players already have the worst CBA in pro sports, and all the NFL teams are profitable.

Unlike the NFL, the NBA owners have shown their books and they are losing massive amounts of money.

Players will have to make some concessions.

I dont think there will ever be a hard salary cap like they have in the NFL,

but the changes I see happening include the following:

-Players will have to give up their percentage of revenues
- Contracts will only be guaranteed for up to 4 years.

The problem with todays NBA in terms of finances is that there are way too many average players that make exorbitant salaries, and way too many pretty goods that get paid at an MVP level.

Nick Collison makes $13 million/year

Michael Finley made $16 to $17 million when he was with the Mavericks.

Rashard Lewis makes $19 million/year

I think the Association is in a little bit of a bind.

They do want their small markets to be competitive, but Portland vs. Charlotte in the NBA finals doesn't draw like LA vs. Boston or NY. (Maybe it does though with the right players?)

There is incredible payroll disparity between some teams that limits some of the competitiveness. How united are the owners on this?

Does Mark Cuban and Jerry Buss (and other big market owners) really want a hard cap or a level playing field?

How about increasing the luxury tax penalty to 500%, instead of 100%?

On the contrary, I think that one year off is the only thing that would give SA and BOS another shot at the title. They could use the rest and rehab, along with another crop of rookies.

People, even athletes, getting older isn't a linear, but an exponential equation. In other words, if going from 25 to 26 is one year, going from 33 to 34 is now 1.7 (or whatever) years. Rest won't make up for that and losing the year means losing the game, competition shape these guys stay in for virtually all year now.

You'd have to go look at the NHL and see how that affected the careers of guys in their mid-30s.

Go check out NBA.com or any team's website. I think they've pulled off all pics & videos of current players. I think everything on the NBA site is retro stuff, and most the team sites now just feature their dance teams.

So.... if they missed the entire season... how would they determine draft order for the 2012 draft?
Iowaggie

Larry Coon mentioned in one of his articles that what the NHL did when they missed the whole season was determine the order for the draft (and it is a studly draft) was to base the draft order off the last 4 seasons or so; not sure if that was after the new CBA had been resolved.

I've read what Coon said and I also read something that talked about a formula based on predicting regular season records to project draft order...I think I've also heard mention of them just making it a completely random lottery, but I doubt that would happen, as a large majority of this lockout is based off of butthurt small market teams wanting to level the playing fields, and since almost all of them suck I doubt they'd want to allow the large markets to have a shot at better draft picks.

I think basing it off of past seasons is the most fair; if you've sucked for 4 years, you deserve to have the greatest odds...although if you've sucked that long it's probably management's fault.

But, of course, crappy management and overpaying of players is what has really led to this lockout, so those teams shouldn't be rewarded. There's no way to win...it really is sad.

I hate the thought of it, but contracting the league might be the most effective way of making everybody shut up; the less opportunities there are for idiots to make stupid decisions, the better.

Although I can't speak for those that are fans of Sacramento, Charlotte, et alii, I would prefer a league with anywhere from 4-8 fewer teams.

Lebron brought this up last year too about contraction and I agree with him. If you get rid of at least 2 teams and raise the overall talent of the remaining teams, it will be much more competitive
