How many people feel that players earn way more than they deserve? This doesn't apply to the overpaid players that management makes a bad decision on; we can all agree that for the market, they are overpaid.

My question is more fundamental and goes across all sports; do you feel that athletes are overpaid for what they do?

Personally, I don't feel that they are. I feel like the industry wouldn't even exist if it weren't for the players, and people who complain that these athletes make millions to "play a game" while they toil away at "regular" jobs don't understand the fundamental issue...that these players have elite skills in an industry that makes a ton of money. Just curious.

If you're one of the top 500 people in the world in a competitive profession and/or a high dollar industry, you're going to get paid pretty well. Throw in the fact that millions of people pay money to watch athletes do their jobs, and the amount is only going to go up.

At a fundamental level, I find it more problematic how much parents are willing to pay for litle kids to have special lessons on sports and activities, and sometimes at the cost of paying off debt or furthering investments.

However, I pretty much buy the supply and demand and worth. The fact is, the top stars are probably underpaid. People pay big money to see the big stars like Kobe, LeBron, D-Wade, Zach Randolph, Durant, or Carmello.

And yes, I did throw in 1 name to see if you read the whole post.

It's supply vs. demand.
That being said, I cannot stand when a player rejects a $5mil/yr contract, claiming that he "has a family to feed."

agree with what everyone said.

also, if you look at other industries, the top .1% of banking makes billions, the top 1% of corporations makes millions, so it only makes sense that the top 1% of all basketball players in the world make millions..

No they are not overpaid...if I made my company the money they made the owners I would expect my fair shake as well. HOWEVER...

Sometimes I feel that the players thing that the owners make more than they do. You have players making statements like "We are just slaves to the owners" and such...it makes them look stupid. Now you have the NBA players wanting to be paid more than teams make. The math isn't there and yet they are insisting on it. Sometimes the players have no sense of reality.

Well to be fair, I don't think most owners of professional sports teams get into it to make a profit; it's more of a hobby and for bragging rights.

Also, nobody really knows how much the owners are making because everybody has their own set of numbers; the owners claim they're losing money and the players claim they're making a profit. I'm sure the truth is somewhere in between.
