A statement issued by the Spurs on Saturday said Buford is a type 1 diabetic and that the crash was “precipitated by a severe low blood sugar reaction.”

Sounds like they are already working on damage control.

He is the legal guardian of a sip athlete. Just letting the sip spin machine work its magic.

Buford was a member of Metcalf's Sweet 16 team in 1980, one of the two greatest teams in A&M history (along with Acie's 2007 team).

Local news brushing it under. Typical. Diabetes doesn't cause you to have an open container of booze in the car.

Met and talked to him after a Lyle Lovett concert in San Antonio this summer.

Really personable guy and loves A&M.

Not defending him or the open container. But after talking to a few people with direct experiences with diabetics, his behavior is entirely plausible. He was administered a blood test...supposedly mobile testing units are dispatched relatively quickly after a warrant is issued. If the test was administered in time, I'd say we should wait until the results come out before piling on. If he's guilty, then by all means pile on if you wish.

Actually, before everyone piles on Buford, a diabetic seizure can absolutely mimic the affects of alcohol consumption, up to the smell of alcohol on the patient's breath...

We had a patient one time who was involved in a single vehicle accident (smashed into a mailbox), and the guy had all the signs an symptoms of being liquored up...

Just as the cops were about to arrest him, his wife shows up (lived just down the street) with medical papers and medicine saying he was a diabetic...not drunk...

Sure enough, after a quick finger stick, the dude proved to have an extreme blood sugar issue, and he was not, in fact, drunk...

On the flip side, the open container and time of day certainly make it sound bad...

You'd be drinking a lot if you had to watch every Spurs game for the past couple years.
