Congrats to Bruce!

Even though I've always said that David and Ice are the only ones who should have this honor, given the others they have retired, no one is more deserving than Bruce.

Definitely not the worst.

Bowen contributed more to the Spurs than Jordan did to the Heat.

Jason Collier, Atlanta Hawks. Played 150 games in 5 years. Started 65 NBA games. Lifetime 5.6p/2.9r

Satch Sanders, Boston Celtics. All-Defense second team once. Lifetime 9/6.

Don Nelson, retired as a player for Celtics, career high of 15/7.

Frank Ramsey, Celtics. 6'3 forward.

Jerry Krause. Chicago Bulls. I **** you not.

Bingo Smith. Cleveland. I have no clue who this is.

Brad Davis. Dallas Mavericks. Lifetime 8.2p/1.8r/4.9a. Peaked at 12 points and 6 assists.

Carroll Dawson Houston Rockets GM. The one that traded an entire draft class for a crackhead, then Rudy Gay for Shane Battier.

Malik Sealy, Minnesota TPups

The Fans, Orlando Magic and Sacramento Kings. Number 6 retired.

Yeah, but he dead.

Satch Sanders, Boston Celtics. All-Defense second team once. Lifetime 9/6.
If you even put a jersey on during that Boston dynasty run, you're getting it retired. Ain't mad at this.

Don Nelson, retired as a player for Celtics, career high of 15/7.
See above. Add points for contributions to alcoholism.

Frank Ramsey, Celtics. 6'3 forward.
Seven rings.

Jerry Krause. Chicago Bulls. I **** you not.
Inadvertantly supplied league with 10 plus years of comedy by drafting Artest and Curry. RESPECT.

Bingo Smith. Cleveland. I have no clue who this is.
[Chappelle Voice]Yeah, but his name was Bingo. Bingo.[/Chappelle Voice]

Brad Davis. Dallas Mavericks. Lifetime 8.2p/1.8r/4.9a. Peaked at 12 points and 6 assists.
It's the Mavs. Aside from last season/Dirk, they have had nothing to cheer for for the duration of their franchise's existence. Second most pathetic list of retired jerseys behind Orlando. Because of that, I ain't mad achu, Brad Davis jersey.

Carroll Dawson Houston Rockets GM. The one that traded an entire draft class for a crackhead, then Rudy Gay for Shane Battier.
I'll co-sign this. For all of his good moves, he still was the one that brought Tracy McGrady to Houston. Unforgivable.

Malik Sealy, Minnesota TPups
Death set fire to Kevin Garnett's career. Inadvertantly brought a championship to Boston because of it.

The Fans, Orlando Magic and Sacramento Kings. Number 6 retired.

Bowen was a contributor, no doubt. I'm sure the city loves him, blah, blah, blah. But seriously, he was a 1.4-dimensional player who's job could have been accomplished just as well by Tony Allen or Shane Battier.

Bowen was in a defensive class way above those guys. While they are good defenders, they don't compare to Bowen. Tell me how many all nba defense first teams (hell, even second teams) those guys have made.

Carroll Dawson is honored for all his years of service to the Rockets as a coach and GM.

He was with the Rockets for 27 years and on all four coaching staffs that went to the NBA Finals.

Come on, now. Kobe Bryant is my favorite non-Rocket/non-Penny Hardaway player ever. Ever!

And I will be the first to tell you that Kobe has no business being on the All-Defensive First Team every year since 2006. The All-Defensive team is the most Jetered of NBA awards and that's saying something.

Ninja, I agree with you whole heartedly on kobe. The guy makes all defense teams by default based on how popular he is. The same could be said for bron too. But that's just it, a guy like bowen is so good that he breaks that default pattern. Other than Jordan, maybe cooper, he has to be one of the top perimeter defenders of all time.

Neither Allen or Battier were close to Bowen defensively in his prime.

Allen couldn't hit the three, and Bruce's three point shot was crazy important to the run. Battier is close, but not quiet as good as Bowen from his spot.

And you said Bowen was the worst player in the NBA to have his jersey retired. Not even close to true. He has his shot and he was one of the best perimeter defenders ever. That is it. Couldn't dribble, couldn't pass, couldn't create. But crazily important to the Spurs winning 3 titles in 5 years.

Title 1:
Marion/Kobe/Dirk/Jefferson
Title 2:
Carmelo/Ray Allen/Marion.Joe Johnson/Rip Hamilton
Title 3:
Carmelo.Iverson/Marion.Barbaro/LeBron

He had some tough guys to guard. Not sure any old defensive specialist could have been up to the task.

Plus, Bowen his 43% or better from three every year with the Spurs in the playoffs, except two. 41% and 38%. Bowen stepped up his game.

Bowen was a huge part of those championship teams, and the failure of the Spurs to replace him after he got too old is a main reason thy haven't been back to the Finals.

Yes Battier could have done the same things, and if so he would have his jersey retired. It's a shame Battier never played for an elite team. I think he'll be a big factor for the Heat in the playoffs.

Bowen belongs to the elite group of *effective* dirty players like Stockton, Jordan, Laimbeer, Rodman. He's an all-time great on that list.

Don't ever put Bowen in the same sentence as Dennis Rodman. Rodman is a hall of famer and impacted the game much more than Bowen ever did. I love that guy.

People outside of San Antonio don't understand the importance of Bowen.

I honestly believe the Spurs don't win in 03, 05 and 07 without him.

This announcement is great news and well deserved. I'm happy for Bruce.

I love Bowen but he's only getting his jersey retired because the bar has been set so low. The Spurs are extremely loyal to the guys who became career Spurs and helped win championships. Bowen is certainly one of those guys.

Isn't that the point of retiring jerseys, to honor the guys who meant a lot to the franchise?

Unless you're a fan of the team that is retiring the jersey of a player that isn't going to make it to the HOF, you have nothing to say about it. He meant a lot to the franchise, don't spread your butthurt to things that have nothing to do with your team.

If you made a little cutout in all four corners of an NBA basketball court, the part just beyond the 3 point line, and called those 4 spots out of bounds, Bruce Bowen would have never scored a point in his NBA career.

TheDino

People seem to confuse retiring jerseys and acceptance into the HOF.

Bruce deserves to have 12 in the rafters but certainly not a spot in the HOF. There is a difference.

And Rogue, if that is your argument then you clearly have an unhealthy hate for Bruce Bowen.
Ulrich
How long do you want to ignore this user?
As a San Antonio fan, there are only two players who clearly deserve the honor more than Bowen... Robinson and Duncan. Maybe Gervin too, but he was before my time.

Bowen was great for the city, one of the best perimeter defenders the league has ever seen, a consistent 3-point threat, and a huge part of the dynasty years. The team hasn't been the same since he left. No one is arguing that he should get retroactive league MVPs or inducted into the HOF, but he deserves to have his jersey retired by the Spurs.

I'd say Ginobili would be clearly ahead. Parker is a closer call. But agree, casual non-Spurs fans do not recognize his significance.

I'd put Manu in the same group as Bowen. He's a better all-around player, but has been injured so much and hasn't been as big in the community as Bowen.

Manu was a much more popular player with fans because of his Latin roots and exciting game.
