ho hum, shocking.

How many career MVPs will this guy finish with? and is there any chance he will possibly be the best player to never win a championship?

quote:
A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press that James will be announced Saturday as this year's winner of the league's top individual honor, and that he'll be formally presented with the trophy by commissioner David Stern on Sunday afternoon before Miami hosts Indiana in Game 1 of an Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Leads his team in points, rebounds, steals and assists all while usually guarding the best player when he's on defense....

I'd say that's pretty valuable.

Should have been 4 in a row. Moses and Wilt both had 3 MVPs before winning a ring. All the pressures on him to not only win the title but also win the Finals MVP convincingly.

Great numbers this year from Lebron. Well deserved.

When the game is on the line with one shot to take, he stands off to the side and watches Dwyane Wade take the shot. Some MVP.

By that logic, no post player should have ever won an mvp in the history of the league.

The heat are advancing because of him. Put him on the knicks...and they wouldve advanced. Hes the best player in the nba.

Deserves it.

Definitely not the most clutch player in the nba

However....is Lebron overrated? Observe...

LeBron James wins his third MVP award. Only seven others have at least three MVP awards: Kareem, MJ, Magic, Larry, Wilt, Moses and Russell.

None of those players have 0 championships.

Much deserved. LBJ will finish with multiple rings and all the fun you guys love to have right now will cease.

in a word...no.

No other player currently in the league could have taken that craptastic team in 07 to the finals like he did. Of course they had no chance of beating a dominant team like the Spurs, but the fact that he took them to the finals with that garbage was unreal.

The heat's record in games when D-Wade didn't play this year is reason enough to give the award to him.

As shatty as the Eastern conference was in 07, has been for most of the past 15 years and is right now, there are a few players that could have gotten that Cleveland team out of the East.

Propping him up for getting out of the East that year isn't really saying that much no matter how arguably bad his supporting cast was. Cleveland had to beat one decent team, a Detroit squad that was a shell of their 04/05/06 teams. New Jersey and Washington were complete shat in their other 2 series that year. Neither of them would have made the playoffs in the West that year and Detroit would have been a 5th or 6th seed in the West.

Lebron is the best player in the league game in and game out, but not necessarily the one guy you would pick for a Game 7, or close-out/save your season situation.

Don't much care for him, but he is one hell of a player, so have to give him props.

However, does anyone else find it at least mildly ironic, (given his performance in the Finals last year), that he has now won it 3/4 times?

depends on the night. He can guard 1-4 at a high level, and play 1-4 at a high level on any given night depending on what his team needs.

He also wins it in a season that's only has 3/4 of a normal season's games.

I haven't either. However, I have seen Kobe's...who is highly regarded as clutch in late game situations and who most analysts and fans always name when asked who they'd rather have at the end of a game...

I clearly saw Jordan with the ball in his hands on that possession. You need to understand what I am posting before you try to respond like a smartass.

LeBron averaged 9.8 assists per 48 minutes of clutch time this year. That is 7th in the league for all NBA players.

Well, I do remember the 10-30 game 4 against the Spurs and, while it wasn't really a closeout game, he had that epic 8 point game 4 last year. I don't remember Michael, Magic, Timmy, Shaq, etc ever having an 8 point game in the Finals. Once the finals started last year, Wade was CLEARLY alpha male on that team.

I think that had more to do with Lebron not feeling comfortable about what his role was on the team/not wanting to step on Wade's feet.

This year has been much more seamless, and with Wade making it publicly official that it's Lebron's team, I don't see the same problem affecting him if they make it to the Finals again.

I could be wrong, but the feel of this Heat team is just different this year. Even tonight when Wade controlled possessions the Heat looked much worse than when LBJ was in control, regardless of who ended up making the bucket.

Now, whether or not you want to argue that LBJ should have out-alpha'd Wade last year when it was on the line is a different conversation....and one that could be had. LBJ is clearly the best player in the league, but he felt constrained last year in the finals no doubt.

No one thoughtLebron had any problems as he made Rose his personal ***** in the ECF then was cruising to a game 2 Finals blowout. Then something slowly started happening. Same thing as the previous 2 years.

Simmons:
quote:
I'm not so sure. LeBron famously shrank from The Moment against Boston. A friend of mine sat right next to Miami's bench in Dallas during Game 4 of the Finals and told me the following story: If you remember, Dallas called timeout after Miami jumped to a seven-point lead with 10 minutes to play. The series looked like it was over, or headed that way, barring a semi-improbable comeback. Wade had been carrying them for this game and the previous one; now, the table was set for LeBron to bring them home. His teammates knew better than anyone.

Here's how my friend remembers it: "They were excited in the huddle because they knew they were close (to finishing Dallas off). I was right there, I was sitting three feet away from their trainer. LeBron sat down and started chewing his fingers. I remember (assistant coach) Bob McAdoo and a few other bench guys kept coming over, slapping him on the shoulder and saying, 'Come on, Bron, take us home.' And he was just staring into space and chewing his nails. I remember AT THAT MOMENT wondering, 'How would MJ be right now?' I thought for sure LeBron would get fired up and feed off those guys. He looked like he wanted no part of it! So they go back out and Dallas starts coming back. Next timeout, same thing. 'Come on, Bron, take us home.' And he's staring into space and chewing his nails. I could see Wade's face. Remember, Wade played his ass off in those Dallas games. Wade had this look on his face like, 'Oh, **** me.' That was when I knew Dallas could win. I don't think LeBron has it in him. I will never forget watching that from that close. I feel like I witnessed history and actually felt that way as it was happening."

those cute stories from Simmons may have 1 month left on their lifespan...but no more than a year or two.

Anyone who buys into this notion that Lebron isn't clutch or hides from the moment is ridiculous...simmons included. It is no secret that he wasn't comfortable last year with his role on the team. The guy also has one of the most amazing playoff performances and clutch moments in history with his showing against the Pistons in game 5(IIRC) in 2007 when he scored 29 of the last 30 for the Cavs.

Other than last year, he has never played on a team anywhere near worthy of winning a NBA championship.

As much as an admitted Lebron fan as I am, I wasn't upset at all to see Dirk beat them and get his own that he deserved...and I also agreed with the notion that maybe he needed to truly feel the scorn of missing out on a title before he deserves to win one.

However, in regards to MVP, and as far as the type of player he is...there's no one else in the league who comes close. As Battier said(when asked about end of game situations), he makes the right basketball play every time...people who fault that are just looking for something to hate on him for.

09 and 10 Cavs were favored to win the title heading into the playoffs. Yes it was a collection of spare players but Lebron and the defense-first system gave them all the measurables to be the favorites. Go read any playoffs preview from those seasons and you'll see the Cavs were elite contenders.

No arguments here, but as Lebron said himself - regular season MVPs are pretty much worthless to him right now. And I'm not a delusional Lebron hater like many people are. I love redemption stories.

Look at that 2009 team.

Mo Williams
Z
Delonte West
Varajao
Boobie
Joe Smith

Holy **** that is a terrible 2-7.

Boston had [Garnett Injured]
Pierce
Allen
Perkins
Rondo
Big Baby

Lakers had:
Kobe
Gasol
Bynum
Odom
Ariza
Fisher

Orlando had:
Howard
Rashard Money
TurkeyGlue
Pietrus
Gortat
JJ Reddick
Courtney Lee

A one-man team cannot win in the playoffs. You make LeBron work and force them to use their second best scorer MO WILLIAMS to beat you. Teams like that have been exploited for decades. Dominique never made it to the conference finals in Atlanta for a reason. Same with Bernard King in NYC.
