Jim Rome wasn't being his normal ass, but Stern gets all defensive about a question about casual fans wondering about a rigged draft lottery.

I don't listen to Rome, but it is time for Stern to move on.

quote:
NBA commissioner David Stern got into a heated exchange with Jim Rome Wednesday when the radio host asked him if the Hornets winning the draft lottery was fixed.

"I know that you appreciate a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy, was the fix in for the lottery?" asked Rome, who hosts a daily show on CBS Sports Network.

"I have two answers for that," Stern said. "The simple easy one, no, the second, a statement, shame on you for asking."

Rome went on to say that he thought it was his job to ask because people wonder.

"No, it's ridiculous, but that's OK," Stern said.

Rome, who used to host the show "Jim Rome is Burning" on ESPN, said he didn't think the question was ridiculous.

Stern responded: "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?"

Since Rome has no history of spousal abuse, it appears that the commissioner was using a traditional loaded question as a tool to make his point -- that the question itself, in this case about the lottery, presumes guilt.

Rome responded: "I don't think that's fair."

After a little more back and forth, Rome said he hoped Stern wouldn't hold the question against him.

"I wouldn't hold it against you," Stern said. "You and I have been in more contentious talks than that. But it's good copy. You do these things for cheap thrills."

Rome took offense to that statement, and Stern changed his characterization.

"Cheap trick," he said. "You've been successful in making a career of it, and I keep coming on."

That prompted a flurry of exchanges:

Rome: "Making a career of it? Making a career of what? What? Cheap thrills?"

Stern: "Now you're getting mad. You're taking on the world and now Jim Rome is pouting."

Rome: "I'm not pouting, I'm taking offense."

Stern: "You want to hang up on me?"

Rome: "No, I'm seriously running out of time."

Stern: "Listen, I gotta go call somebody important like Stephen A. Smith back. He's next."

Rome: "OK, you go make that call and I'll go talk to somebody else too I guess. Have a nice day. I did not hang up on him, we are officially out of time."

Stern is the very definition of a putz - he looks the part and lives the part. Someone with any competence whatsoever easily dismisses that question without looking like a jackass. Stern was born a jackass though, and the league would be in a much better place if he'd pull a Bart Giamatti.

Well, Rome is a putz too, but I would disagree with Stern's "loaded question" analogy. I also think when your league has had a shady ref get busted by the feds, you've lost ground to act overly indignant about "fixing" questions.

The NBA only has itself to blame for lottery theories.

How about televising the ping pong ball selection? I see it on the Lotto all the time, it's not complicated.

NBA lottery ball isn't going to be a ratings bonanza. But you could at least let guys film it for sports news.

Don't understand all of the Rome hate? He was simply doing his job and I didn't think anything was wrong with the question. Stern has to be aware of the fact that some people think the NBA is shady at best. The real question is didn't he know before hand that Rome was going to ask that question?

Just listened to the segment. Stern comes off as petty and a jackass. You are in a position where you have to answer questions like that. Then he goes off and makes a terrible analogy.

Rome and Stern have a pretty long history I believe. His interviews with Stern have always been pretty intense.

Any commissioner w/ the smallest of skills could answer that question professionally if indeed the league is innocent.

However, Commissioner Stern plays the defensive card and questions Jim Rome's integrity by claiming he beats his wife. It just seems fishy

He didn't claim that Rome beat his wife, he was just using a classic example of a loaded question.

While I don't care for Rome, Stern came across as the much bigger idiot.

Stern was right about having a handful of lottery team that would fit the CT.
1. Hornets-park of the sale price (getting the top pick)
2. bobcats-helping his old pal Jordan
3. Jersey-new staduim, location. Help with east cost TV.

Stern MADE the NBA. He turned it into a cash register, so he is full of himself. Which, quite frankly, he has earned.

Wouldn't that be an admission of a conspiracy in itself? If you have nothing to prove, why would you need to do anything?

the problem i had was that stern, a VERY accomplished lawyer, came off looking like an ass when answering his question. He always comes onto rome's show and he knows rome will bring it every time, so why not say, "Hey, cmon now, jim. You know it's not rigged. Of course we don't rig the lottery, as we have E&Y as our Lottery Auditors and PwC as our Secondary auditors who review the lottery selections and agree the results."

Not saying who was right or wrong in this 1 instance, I am just not a fan of Rome. I think he is the epitomy of an egotistical shock jock who thinks that he is part of the story.
