And it sounds like.Chicago probably won't match. This would be a guy that morey has wanted for a while. I like Asik as a player and he's younger and better than Dalembert.

Also rumors of us courting Eric Gordon, buy the hornets will most likely match any offer.

That rules out the Mavericks having a chance at him. Asik is likely the most coveted FA center this year but 8mm/y seems a little steep to me.

Also no way the Bulls match.

Asik is a strong defensive player, but has really no offensive game. Not sure that is worth $8 million.

Would signing ask have any impact on motiejunas coming over??

I doubt it. D-Mo is more of a PF than a true Center, so they will be playing different positions most likely. So you could argue that drafting Jones might have more of an impact on Donatas' future than signing Asik. But then again, we all know how much Morey loves PFs, so drafting Jones may not jeopardize D-Mo's roster spot at all

Where do you see any offer? Everything I've read says at they are "considering" offering him $8M per year. I don't think any official offer has been extended yet.

Should clarify that Hibbert is obviously the most coveted but until today I assumed Pacers would match any offer.

Asik is a great backup. $8MM per year to be a starter is way overpaying him. I hope the Bulls don't match an offer that stupid.

Unless your backup is a 6th Man award contender, you don't pay your backup $8mm/year. And most 6th men contenders would start for a lot of teams.

Jonathan Feigen is claiming it's 25 over 4 years but who knows. If this is the case, makes it a bit easier to swallow especially if the intent is for him to be your starting center.

Other rumor is that amount over 3 years with like $13MM loaded on the 3rd year. If that's true, holy ****.

yikes. apparently that's allowed under the new CBA? I recall the drastically backloaded contracts being prohibited in past years. Can anybody confirm or deny?

This was Morey's plan all along - make it known to the public that we are exploring multiple trade avenues to land a superstar like Dwight Howard knowing all along that it won't happen, use the mid-first round picks that we've had for the past 4 years to draft 2 more PFs and sign a player w/ 3 ppg and 8 rbg to a 3 year, 24+ million dollar contract to replace a more productive, yet cheaper Samuel Dalembert.

Solid plan

Sammy was only making 7mm/year.

Paying more for a guy that isn't as good.

Morey sees Asik as the next Gortat and didn't want to lose him by low balling. The Arenas rule made the beginning two years of the contract have to be low, but the 3rd year is so high to ensure Chicago does not match.

If Asik turns out to be Gortat 2.0, it's a good deal, since you got him for relatively cheap for a couple of years, then he's. Mega-expiring as trade bait.

If he turns out to be crap, the you've got an ok contract for a couple of years, and a crappy expiring that you hope will have value to someone looking to dump an expensive better player.

I don't love Asik, but Morey has been after him for a while, so this move may end up defining his tenure with the Rox.

I think that's a tough argument to make considering Asik has only played about 200 total NBA minutes

He's played in 150 games and averaged 15 minutes per game last year. Not sure how you are doing your math. I have watched him a lot because the bulls are the second team in this house because my wife's family is from Chicago and I feel very comfortable saying he's better than Dalembert.

+ Mobile big man with great defensive awareness and shot-blocking skill.

+ Mistake-prone offensive player. Brings ball down around basket. Can finish.

+ Outstanding pick-and-roll defender. Limited post game and ball skills.

The Chef Linguini lookalike quickly became one of my favorite players to watch last season because of his vastly underrated defensive prowess. Asik fouled too much (once every 6.5 minutes) and seemingly committed a defensive three-second violation every game, but he blocked shots, crashed the boards (15th among centers in rebound rate) and, more than anything, stymied countless opponent forays with his length and unusually sharp defensive awareness for a rookie. The combination of Asik and Taj Gibson, in particular, proved stifling; the Bulls gave up 9.7 fewer points per 100 possessions with Asik on the court, according to basketballvalue.com, while 82games.com tells us opposing centers had just a 12.3 PER against him.Offensively, Asik can best be described as "mistake-prone." Only two centers had a worse turnover ratio thanks to his jittery hands and hazy understanding of what constitutes a legal screen. While he led the NBA in free throw attempts per field goal attempt at 1.03 (see Chris Andersen comment), that was mostly a conscious choice by opponents since he made only 50.4 percent from the line. Additionally, many times he was slow to gather and go up after receiving a pass at the rim, giving opponents time to hack him and prevent a dunk.

Another stat shows more clearly that he kept getting his shot blocked because he wasn't going up quickly enough. Asik is a good leaper and threw down some impressive dunks, but it took him an eternity to wind up. As a result, only Toronto's Reggie Evans had more of his shots sent back.

Trading for him and saved the Spurs close to $10mm and allowed them to trade for Kurt Thomas, who was an important player in allowing the Spurs to make it to the Western Conference Finals that year - a feat the Rockets haven't done in 15 years. Since that trade, the Spurs have topped 50 wins each season while the Rockets have steadily decreased from 55 to 53 to 42 to 43 to 34.

I'd say it worked out fine for the Spurs. How was your lottery pick this year?

Guitar-

I am fairly positive the Scola trade comment had nothing to do with which franchise has done better over the last 15 years. The point was the one time the Spurs made a trade with the Rockets, Morey got the better end of the deal. No Spurs fan can honestly say they wouldn't love to have Scola playing PF right now with Duncan at center.

Yep, and Peter Holt forced Pop & RC to make the trade to get under the luxury tax. To this day, Pop still won't talk about it.

Morey got lucky that Holt was penny pinching 5 years ago and has done a bunch of nothing since.

What an idiot GS is...Have Parker and Duncan get seriously injured see how good the last couple years would be for you...ie, YAO and TMAC.

Some people can't come to grips that Morey got lucky on a couple deals and has not been all that great otherwise and the Rockets franchise is doing little more than having their wheels spin for the last 10 years.
