This reminds me of Cuban in 2001 when he started blowing money on bad contracts like Finley and trading for Juwon Howard. The Russian is 10 years behind the times (surprise! ). He just wants to prove to everyone that he's willing to spend money in Brooklyn. Congrats. Maybe he'll learn that spending the most money gets you exposure and flashy players but doesn't win titles.

Good point.

He's definitely tighter with his money now that the Mavs have a trophy.

I think that, as well as the CBA, might be playing into this FA stuff. It used to be that Cuban was seen as an owner that every player wanted to play for. After cutting loose Chandler, Barrera and Stevenson last year, and not signing Jet this year, I think that image is fading.

Glancing at his Forbes profile it doesn't appear his wealth is much different from a few years ago.

Prokhorov went to the same school of spending as Roman Abramovich did for Chelsea

Abramovich spent over 1 BILLION in transfer fees to get players. It paid off.

Well he was off filming some TV show while the most important FA for the future of the franchise was meeting with his underlings so I'd wager to say this is correct.

That episode of Shark Tank better be like Lonesome Dove, or Cuban is going to catch hell.

I thought the way its set up now, you dont just pay a luxury tax anymore. Arent there actual ramifications to the team if you are a repeat offender?

Yes...in the 2nd year you have to pay luxury tax it goes up to $2.50 for ever $1.00 you're over, then in year 3 it goes up to $5.00 for every $1.00...not sure after that.

I've definitely wondered this. Not many possible realities here that I can see.

A) He doesn't want to sign these players for some reason and is using the CBA as an excuse and to blow smoke.
B) He doesn't understand the new CBA correctly
C) He's THAT much smarter than all these other owners and the Mavs will win every championship from 2014 to the end of this CBA.
D) Stern gave Cuban a copy of a fake CBA as a giant "**** you" present.

I'll go with D.

E) He didn't sign those players and took a big gamble to sign Howard and Williams this Summer. Once Howard was "Blackmailed" into signing on for another year in Orlando, that plan blew up.

^ That would be under option C. If having cap room is as crucial as he says it is, a lot of teams are screwed.
