Remember when LA had Gary Peyton at the point (with a seasoned, but still young, Derek Fisher behind him), Kobe at the 2, George/Fox at the 3, Karl Malone at the 4, and Shaq at the 5?
They did win the West (barely), but missed out on the title, and this lineup was far superior to this one. My point is that it often doesn't work our when a team picks up an aging star and expects him to be the difference. Role players can fit in without disrupting the chemistry that has been developed, but plugging in guy who you expect to (often) run your offense through is a lot harder. It takes awhile to get it working, and that's hard on the old guys.
