For the Grizzlies, and Tony Barone & Tony Barone Jr. are expected to be fired.

And not related, but not related to anything else, sometime JaVale McGee is good for a few great moments a month.

Moneyball can't be successful in a superstar driven league. Fact.

Moneyball works, but not on its own. You need one or two stars in the NBA, but after that the difference between the great regular season teams and great playoff teams is moneyball.

Think about the Josh Smith/Joe Johnson Hawks, Steve Nash/Amare Stoudemire Suns, or the Dwight Howard Magic. They had stars, but the teams that won hardware had balanced, talented rosters at least 8 deep.

In today's nba with the bull**** max contracts it is impossible to win a championship without 2-3 all stars and/or 2 superstars. The nba regular season is irrelevant now. Everyone knows what the conference finals will look like. NBA has worst parity in major sports and that's why it sucks now

Ulrich,

Name a franchise in the last 5-7 years that has won a title with "moneyball"

Read my whole post, I literally said you have to have stars to win. Fine, I'll break it down even more.

Moneyball = Houston Rockets
Stars = Atlanta Hawks
Stars + moneyball = Spurs, Lakers, Mavericks

Moneyball isn't settling for nothing but low-paid role players. It's getting good value for the money you pay and making decisions based on numbers and facts rather than opinions.

Spurs are the closest thing you'll find. Lakers are no where near a "moneyball" team.

Not now, they were a lot closer when they were winning titles in the late 2000s. Now they are just throwing money at stars.

And the Boston red sox were the second team to go all in with moneyball concepts right before they won their world series.

Hotard,
It has shown some success in baseball but in today's NBA it will NOT work

The Mavericks already use moneyball concepts in the NBA and won a championship with it and only one super star in Dirk.

Kidd was a top 5 PG at that time and terry was 6th man of year

Among guards only, Kidd was 8th in assists, 3rd in assists to turnovers, 94th in scoring, 9th in rebounds, and 8th in steals. Not a top 5 PG in talent or production at that stage in his career; you can't put him ahead of guys like Rondo, Nash, Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Tony Parker, Derrick Rose, Russell Westbrook, and whoever else I've forgotten. Kidd was in the second tier of point guards.

But...

While Kidd couldn't create jack for himself, he could keep the ball moving in the half court, give the ball to Nowitzki, and orchestrate the fast break. He wore skates on defense, but it was ok because Chandler erased his mistakes and Kidd jumped passing lanes pretty well to create turnovers.

In 2010-2011, Kidd was the epitome of a moneyball player. He completely failed the "does this guy look like an elite player" eyeball test, but he fit their team like a glove. They got exactly what they needed out of the PG position for 8 million a year rather than the 15 million it takes to get an elite point guard.
