Why were the Blazers willing to trade Drexler for Thorpe and a pick? I know Portland was basically out of the playoff race, but had Clyde stated he wouldn't re-sign with Portland?

Clyde requested the trade.
I knew he had requested the trade, but was his contract up and had he stated he wouldn't re-sign?
Clyde was getting old. Blazers were rebuilding and he wasn't a part of their rebuilding plans. They could get a draft pick out of someone who wouldn't be a part of the rebuilding process and wanted out.
They could have picked up Clyde and the #3 pick in the draft for Ralph Sampson. They blew it.
It was partly a favor to Clyde he was a great pro for them for a long time and they were rebuilding.

Clyde and #2. The Bulls had #3.
So build around Hakeem+Clyde+MJ. They also had Robert Reid and John Lucas at the time.
