McGrady was most recently playing in China as detailed here in a Chronicle story from February.

McGrady played 52 games with the Hawks in 2011-12, including three games in the playoffs against the Celtics. He played for the Rockets from 2004 to 2009.

The Spurs have just one game left in the regular season — Wednesday vs. Minnesota.

It would take another step for the Spurs to put McGrady on their roster for the playoffs.

And one possible first-round opponent: the Rockets.

Wouldn’t that be fun.

I am not sure how I feel about this. Hopefully now he can say he got out if the first round. Still makes no sense to me, other than an extra 5 fouls sitting in the bench.
