Funny to see these sports announcers backpedaling re Spurs/Grizz

First off, I was kind of perplexed that all these guys talking about how the Grizz front line was just going to dominate, when the history of the games this season said otherwise.

Prior games showed that Randolph struggled; that Gasol was good but not dominant; and that they had no other shooter that lit things up other than Gay, who they traded in January.

Pre-game, Magic and others were talking about how unless the Spurs could speed up the pace, Grizzlies will just grind them down in a half-court game.

By half-time, Magic was talking about how the Grizzlies needed to push the pace and get out of the slow pace half-court game, as if nothing different was ever said an hour earlier.

I would have loved to have been a panelist pre-game to ask them all, "why do you think the Grizzlies are going to dominate the Spurs front line when it was the Spurs who did most of the dominating in all 4 games they played this year?"

Spurs are clearly more comfortable playing this kind of ball than what they had to play against Golden State.

Magic Johnson is a horribly two-faced pundit.

I still think the spurs find a wAy to lose, but that has to be the worst panel on television. All except Wilbon are painful to listen to. Simmons almost clearly takes rooting interest in each series. Only thing that could make them worse is adding John Barry

Honestly, the guys on espn have probably not watched either of these two teams except for the playoffs, and even then it was probably only to watch the other teams.

Magic is horrible. Simmons is great for historical perspective of the league, but sucks for current and ongoing perspective.

However, unless it if the lakers, heat, knicks, okc, nets, Celtics, or Derrick rose's knee, they struggle on content.

im not saying they won't. But on what the **** do you base this on, especially after what you saw in game 1. And don't just say the spurs won't shoot 50% the entire series.

Memphis doesn't have Labron or Durant. IMO, the only way to stymie the Spurs is to have one guy they can't guard. For a minute I thought Steph Curry might be a guy like that but Danny Green showed us he's not. In 2011, Randolph was able to be that guy. But this Spurs team is significantly better defensively than they were two years ago.

The problem with pundits is they only believe what they've seen. And they've seen Memphis beat SA recently with many of the same players involved. What they can't see is this team now has Splitter in year three plus Green, Leonard and Diaw; none of whom were on the team two years ago. That's a significant upgrade especially from a size standpoint.

Everyone seems to have a fuzzy memory about the Spurs health two years ago. I remember Manu was injured, correct? Duncan was hobbled. And, as Ag Natural mentioned, Splitter, Greene & Leonard are significant roster upgrades.

On the other side, I don't think Memphis' roster is significantly better.

Manu had that stupid-big cast/brace on his arm because he broke it at the very end of the regular season. Pretty amazing that he only missed one game with a broken arm. Duncan was hobbled as well, I think with a combination of plantar fasciatis and knee issues. No Leonard/Green/Diaw and super raw Splitter. Last but not least, Bonner's post irritation has improved immensely since then. He trolls the opposing post more than he actually defends, but it's relatively effective as part of the Spurs defensive gameplan.

The Spurs are healthier, but Prince is a significant upgrade from Sam Young who has been in and out of the league (now with Pacers). Without question, Conley and Gasol are better from 2 years ago.

ZBo's peak was probably those 2011 playoffs, and not that he's taken a big step back, but he's not been like that before. Pondexter is better than Battier, but Battier would get those calls from the refs based on rep that QP doesn't get.

Bayless and Mayo are probably a trade-off. Sometimes you can love them, other times you hope a division rival foolishly signs them.

Arthur has found a way to commit more stupid fouls these playoffs than he did 2 years ago. He's not as healthy. It would also be nice to have Greivis Vasquez, too.

he's not, and Gay was injured in 2011.

and just listened to Simmons slobber all over Dincan and the Spurs for 20 minutes on the podcast. How can he defend Duncan as the greatest player of this generation and make all these excuses for the lack of Finals appearances and then pick Memphis?

At least he admits he's been ice cold on picks so far.

I just didn't like the way the Spurs have been playing over the last month, save for maybe 1 game in the Golden State series. I also don't expect Bonner, Neal, Green, and Splitter to continue having success, because they've shown every year in the playoffs that they can't be counted on when things get tough. The last two years this same team (almost) has choked to two teams they should have beaten, even without a healthy Manu in 2011.

I'm not saying they can't win, because they could win easily in 5 games if they can duplicate their game 1 intensity. I just don't see this team doing that. They remind me too much of the mid-late 90s mentally fragile Spurs teams that always found a way to choke.

I don't understand why I have to be willing to bet money on something I expect to see, even though I happily acknowledge that I could be wrong. I would love to see the Spurs go to another Finals. I just don't expect them to finish the job in this series and get there.

Yes, obviously minus the 99 team, obviously. I figured you gurus would get that.

I bet I went to more Spurs games that year than any of you bozos. I seem to recall spending Memorial Day that year in the nosebleeds of the Alamodome. Something important happened that day, as I recall.

I probably watched damn near every Spurs game from 95-01. It was nice not having any responsibility like college classes or a job.

Why? Because I don't puff out my chest like a dumbass clown homer like you and Obi and Shark, without pointing out anything objective to backup a point of view.

I guess I will try providing great insight like the three of you always seem to. Some of you are like the simplebay version of spurs fans.

I can guarantee that I went to more Spurs games than anyone on here from 1987-2000.

Our dome tickets were SW Row 4 seats 3 & 4. I was at the MDM and then was a part of the big group of Spurs fans that met Sean Elliott in front of his house afterwards.

Why do you feel the need to single me out? I'm a homer dumbass for believing my team is capable of winning this series? A team that led the league for a lot of the season?

can you help me understand when i crossed over from being an avid supporter to a homer? i think you'll be hard pressed to find evidence of me being a homer. i've given props where they are due all season to other players and teams.

and while you're at it, can you explain to me how it is any worse than doing what you are doing? you cheer when they win and doubt them when they aren't playing. you're hedging about as hard as simplegay typically does.

it's hard to believe you are finding faults in a team playing so well. they swept a lakers team that, despite missing kobe, still had dwight effing howard and pau gasol, both of which have a long track record of success. they did it by grinding and playing a type of basketball they don't typically play during the season.

next, they take steph curry's best shot, followed by clay thompsons best shot, followed by harrison barnes playing well over his rookie head, and still manage to come out on top, even though the golden girls were playing with NOTHING to lose and enough energy to run anyone out of the building.

as if that wasn't enough, the spurs get matched up with one of the hottest teams in the league, a team that most of the talking heads of basketball thought would molest the spurs down low, and the spurs proceed to slap them in the face with 5+ players in double figures.

but then here comes you, bumbling along, playing the pessimist, for no other reason to hedge against the possibility of them losing. it's cute, in an annoying, pathetic way.

People seem to forget how much of an impact Arthur had on that 2011 series. As great as Randolph was, Arthur was the X-factor IMO. He made key baskets and the Spurs could not handle his energy and athleticism. He has not been the same since his injury last year and the Griz don't currently have someone like 2011Arthur to hurt the Spurs.

Sean!!! Favorite Spur of all time. And I actually named my cat after Mario Elie. Loved those spurs in the 80s/90s... David, Sean, TC, Willie Anderson, Avery, Person, Antoine Carr...the list goes on.

My boyfriend a few weeks ago said he didn't like David Robinson. I almost broke up with him.
