Actually no, somebody doesn't have to. But if someone does, it's a Mavs fan.

Other than Mavs fans have nothing to do while the Spurs are in the finals (assuming this isn't a troll), why do these teams need to be compared?

Same Finals opponent if I had to guess the OP's intention. I'll just go ahead and do it:

Dirk > Grandfather Duncan
Kidd > France
Marion > Kahwhaiwhiahwihawia
Chandler > whatever foreigner the Spurs have
Terry > Bald Pinocchio
Crippled Caron > Danny Fair-skinned
Carlisle > Pop

There. Now you can whine about Mavs fans and get your twats in a froth like you all love to do.

TBH, it's not the Heat's opponent that should be compared it's probably the Heat themselves. 2013 Heat are a different team than 2011 Heat, both in good and bad ways.

Obviously the 2011 Heat had only been together the 1 year and didn't have the chemistry yet. 2012 Heat won a championship. 2013 Heat won 27 games in a row. The 2013 Heat are better than the 2011 Heat.

If the Spurs win does that now become the greatest championship ever since that's what Mavs cling to? Spurs would be beating a champion istead of a first year team together.

The 2011 Mavs are both the most dominant playoff team of all-time and the biggest Cinderella story. Basically the '27 Yankees crossed with '83 NC State. Then they completely broke up the team within 12 months only to keep legend from being tarnished. It's just not a fair comparison for anyone.

I'm sorry, but some of the Mavs fans on this website are crazy. Yes, the Dallas championship was impressive. However, it wasn't the most dominant or the biggest cinderella. And to be honest, if the Spurs win the Finals this year, it will be more impressive than the Mavs. Sweep two of the three Western Conference series and then beat the Heat who have won 27 games in a row at one point this season? Yeah, I'll go with San Antonio.

Also, if you go by lowest seeds to win the Finals, the biggest cinderella was the '95 6 Seeded Rockets. Just thought I'd throw that out there as well

Hopefully no one bites on this.

I started to, then I saw that you had Kidd over TP. Even I saw the hook behind the worm... briefly considered launching a counter troll but decided not to.

Spurs beat the Lakers MASH unit, a young team with a one legged David Lee, and a team that can't shoot. They played the lower seed in every round.

Mavs beat a Portland team that many picked to upset them, swept the defending champs at full strength, and beat OKC at full strength.

The Mavs also did all of that without their starting SF in Caron Butler.

Mavs run was more impressive, IMO. That being said, Spurs in 6 over Miami.

Heat will dominate. Lebron isn't gonna let 2011 happen again.

I wish we were getting ready to play Eddie House, Joel Anthony and Mike Bibby.
TheMasterplan

Starting five is the exact same boss just replace Anthony with Haslem. Even back then Haslem was still getting way more playing time than Anthony.

Bibby and House never played either. And Anthony is still on the squad.

Team consists of the exact same players pretty much and Andersen aint doing **** to Dirk that's for sure. Bosh and Dwade are worse too.

I think the Spurs get it done just like the Mavs did in 2011. In my view it will be a win for the ages and solidify Pop as one of the best coaches in US professional sports history.

I don't know when "that was the greatest playoff run ever" became "that was the greatest playoff team ever". The 2011 team lost a starter for the year, and were literally the underdog for every round except the first. They also had to go against the newly-formed super-team. I don't get why y'all get so uppity about Mavs fans being proud of that, yet you still throw around terms like "flagship" when you don't even have the most rings.

BTW, in that linked discussion, a lot of people favor the Mavs, despite having neutral affiliation. That team WAS good, and is in no way a knock on how good the Spurs are right now.
But I guess it's just, like, their opinion, man.

That run by the Mavs was great. Portland over Dallas was the sexy upset pick in round one. I don't think anybody gave the Mavs an honest shot with their 2nd best scorer out. When they choked at the Rose Garden it was history repeating. That was a big moment.

Better comparison would be Spurs 03. No superstar has done more to drag an undermanned team to the title than Duncan in 03.

See my post in the other thread regarding flagship, it's a Rivalries thing and doesn't show up here.

Show me where in this thread anyone is saying the Mavs run wasn't impressive and that their fans shouldn't be excited about it and their first championship? It's the arrogance of calling it the 'greatest playoff run ever' or 'greatest playoff team ever' that annoys people. That is different than being excited about the championship.

ESPN's John Hollinger's take on the greatest runs in playoffs history. I don't have insider so I can only see 1-5. Take it for what it's worth but there's no Texas teams in the top 5.

http://espn.go.com/nba/playoffs/2012/story/_/page/greatestruns-1-5/nba-playoffs-ranking-greatest-runs

P.S. Everyone is going to homer for their own team, it's what we do for the Ags and it'll happen for their pro teams as well.

Someone has been reading Pelton's postseason rankings.

Duncan in 2003 was nearly unstoppable

For those interested, Jordan 91 was the top individual playoff performance.

2. LBJ 12
3. Duncan 03
4. Shaq 00
5. Jordan 93

2011 Dirk came in at number 50. Behind 2011 Wade AND 2011 LBJ. I got a laugh out of that.

There, against a New Jersey Nets team making its second consecutive Finals appearance, Duncan took over to an unprecedented degree. He averaged 24.2 points, 17.0 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 5.3 blocks, capped by a 21-20-10-8 performance in the closeout Game 6 that came close to becoming the first quadruple-double in playoffs history. Duncan settled for the only 20-20-10 in the past 27 Finals, his second championship and the third spot on this list.

Wow.
