Holy Crap.

Also, he wasn't coach of the year over Pop IMO.

Emphasis mine.

quote:

NBA Coach of the Year George Karl won't return to the Denver Nuggets next season, Yahoo! Sports is reporting.

Karl, who is in the final year of his contract, wanted to extend his deal but the Nuggets balked at the request, Yahoo! Sports reported, citing a league source.

The Los Angeles Clippers had engaged in initial conversations with the Nuggets about Karl, league sources told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Ramona Shelburne earlier this week, but had yet to officially request permission to speak with him.

Karl's reported ouster follows the exit of general manager Masai Ujiri, the NBA's Executive of the Year, who left the Nuggets to become the Toronto Raptors' executive vice president of basketball operations.

Nuggets forward Kenneth Faried reacted with shock on Twitter to the news.

He tweeted: "So we lost a GM now a coach what's next!?"

Karl was named the NBA's top coach after leading the Nuggets to a 57-win season. The Nuggets were the third seed in the Western Conference but were ousted in the first round by the Golden State Warriors.

It was the eighth time in Karl's nine playoff appearances with Denver that the Nuggets had been ousted in the first round.

Karl worked wonders this season with a lineup that lacked an All-Star, was beset by injuries to several starters and twisted its way through a brutal early-season schedule in which 22 of the team's first 32 games were on the road.

Relying on an old-school, up-tempo offense and a deep bench that wore out opponents, especially at altitude, the Nuggets led the league in scoring, fast-break production and points in the paint with nary a dominant scorer -- Ty Lawson led Denver with 16.7 points a game, which ranked 31st in the league.

They went an NBA-best 38-3 at home, winning their last 23 games at the Pepsi Center in the regular season and going 24-4 overall after the All-Star break.

Karl is 1,131-756 in his 25 seasons as head coach and 80-105 in the playoffs. In his time in Denver, Karl is 423-257 in the regular season with three division titles and 21-39 in the playoffs. Karl's 21 straight non-losing seasons tie Phil Jackson for the longest streak in league history.

To duplicate others: wow!

I think there are to many gm/directors of basketball operations that play fantasy sports.

Not sure I am phrasing that correctly, but wow

Clips should be better now. Not sure what the Nuggets were thinking. Maybe there is more to this.

George Karl will be perfect for the Clippers. Run and gun, win lots in the regular season, go home early in the playoffs. They will be the new Phoenix Suns.

So stupid. They will never get someone else to get more out of this team.

8 of 9 appearances end up as a first round exit in the playoffs makes you a great regular season coach but just can't get it done in the playoffs. I guess Denver figures they can go deep in the playoffs but Karl isn't the guy.

This. Regardless of how strongly the organization/players/fans feel about what his playoff record is, the other main thing to consider is who will replace him? What are the alternatives? Other than Phil Jackson and Larry Brown, are there really any other available coaches in the world that you can say 'Yep, that guy will totally do a better job than George Karl can.'

I seriously doubt it.

Dumb. Would be funny if Denver misses the playoffs next season, with the Clippers beating them on the last day to knock them to the 9th spot.

Just a ridiculous move, but oh well its great news for teams in the West

Has to be a pre-emptive strike. Karl was leaving for Toronto or Clips anyways

George Karl to Clips
Lionel Hollins to Nets
PJ Carlisimo to ESPN
JVG to Denver
Vinny Del Negro to ESPN Desportes

Churn & repeat.

Actually, Denver has requested to speak to Hollins.
One of George Karl's buddies, Stu Lash, is in FO in Memphis.

EIther way, the 3, 4, 5 Western Conference seeds could all have new coaches...and who knows what will happen if the #2 seed wins the NBA Finals?

Everyone acts surprised here, but let's flip the tables.

Say a coach was at A&M and really had the program winning a lot of games, and finishing high in the conference (and national) standings, but got ousted 8 of 9 times in the first round of the NCAA.

ABSOLUTELY 95% of the posters here would be clamoring for a change, and maybe rightly so.

I think Karl is a great coach, but there's absolutely nothing that happened this year to make the franchise think they be one of the Western conf finalists next year if George remains.

Maybe true, but if you're convinced Karl can't get you where you want to go- and the can't backup the gaudy regular season record theme goes back through his Milwaukee days and even a little bit while he was at Seattle- then maybe you have to take that risk.

We sort of dealt with this with our longtime women's tennis coach. Finally fired him and our new coach just took us within a set of a national championship.

People beetch about Mark Turgeon's post-season track record even though he won 25+ games a year here. There's a lot of frustration with our baseball staff right now, and while our regular season record this year played a part in it, the frustration is definitely rooted in a perceived lack of post-season success. There's definite frustration with the soccer program, and some (very much in the minority) have even gone so far as to call for the coach's job, the saving grace there being that he's made a ton of Sweet 16 and Elite 8 runs.

The post-season matters, and I don't think you can argue that Karl has not been a post-season flop.

This isn't a move I might have made, and it didn't work out all that well when Milwaukee did it, but I can certainly understand the frustration and I can understand where they are coming from. I'm not sure if I admire their stones, or if I should mock their stupidity. Ask me in a year, I guess.

Winning in the post season is not only on the shoulders of the coach. Theyve consistently been better in the regular season than the post season because they typically have deep benches and can run you off the court in altitude when teams come in ragged. When the gaps between games go up and benches shorten in the playoffs, they are exposed for the roster they truly have put together. It looked like this year they might break that trend, but suffered some untimely injuries in the post season.

His playoff run with Denver

05-06: Lost in 1st round 4-1 to #6 Clippers
07: Lost in 1st round 4-1 to NBA Champs Spurs
08: Lost in 1st round 4-0 to NBA Runner-up Lakers
09: Lost in WCF 4-2 to NBA Champs Lakers
10: Lost in 1st round 4-2 to #5Utah Jazz
11: Lost in 1st round 4-1 to #4 Thunder
12: Lost in 1st round 4-3 to #3 Lakers
13: Lost in 1st round 4-2 to #6 Warriors

I'm disappointed for Karl. I'm not convinced he deserves to keep his job, but I'm not a huge Carmelo fan, so I'm not sure his results were so disappointing for any of those years, except for this year when they lost Galinari and faced a very hot GSW team.
