But watching the draft last night I couldn't believe it when I heard it... N.O. is now the PELICANS. Really... the Pelicans!!!!

I can't think of a worse name for any professional club ever!!! 1st of all, you gotta keep it to 2 syllables or less. 2nd of all, if you are gonna choose a bird, it better be something that hunts warm blooded creatures!!!!!

Seriously, how could any committee seriously approve that name!!!???

How about a team that named themselves after a style of pants that Dutch settlers liked to wear? Also, 4 syllables.

Or a team that named themselves after the year the USA gained independence? 5 syllables

Or the teams that named themselves after the weather/nature?

People will get used to it.

In the 90s when Bob Arum bought the Timberwolves (before Stern blocked it, because a boxing promoter can't own an NBA team) the city wanted to rename the Timberwolves the Rhythm.

Some city council member was on TV saying "You can take away our Jazz, but you can't take away our Rhythm!"

What? No way, they didn't play as the Pelicans all year did they (maybe the decision was made a while back though)? I can't be that far out of the loop can I?

I don't really watch many games at all until the playoffs, and they certainly weren't close to getting there.

I live in nola. The brown pelican is the state bird of Louisiana and one of the few great conservation success stories. Its definitely not intimidating but at least it relates to the state, which the hornets never did.

Most the fans didn't care for it but the other final options werent any better. Most fans wanted the jazz name back even though that wasnt happening.

You can be a NBA w/o knowing the Pelicans. The team is an insignifigant bottom feeder .Nobody has ever met a Pelican fan. They are struggling because Utah still has their name.

The real problem is that it's not easily shortened.

Cavaliers --> Cavs
Knickerbockers --> Knicks
Timberwolves --> T Wolves
Trail Blazers --> Blazers
Pelicans --> Pels? P-cans? Cans? Maybe Pels works? Sounds like something Stuart Scot and no one else will use.

My father-in-law always calls pelicans "Freddie the Free-Loader" because they are always trying to snatch your bait or eat the scraps of the fish you just cleaned.

The Pelicans could be a damn fine team next year with the addition of Jrue Holiday. Not sure they can make the playoffs, but they will be a pain in the ass to play type of team.

SG - Eric "Glass" Gordon,
SF - Al-Farouq Aminu,
PF - Anthony Davis, Paul Anderson
C - Not Brooke, but Robin Lopez,


I could see them making a run at Andre Iguodala or Chase Budinger

Adding Iguodala would make them a very rough team to play even if Gordon never plays for them again (pretty good chance Gordon gets traded).

Eric Gordon is a *****. I doubt too many people are dying to have him.

The only way Eric Gordon gets traded is if the Pelicans give up another 1st rounder and get back a 2nd rounder. But I didn't think Joe Johnson & Rudy Gay were tradeable either because of their contracts.

Not a bad player at 3 year/12 million, but a horrible player at 3/45 million

He is better than 3y12mm. That is Danny Green money. Gordon is capable of 20+/4/3 on .450/.380/.780 shooting. That's all-star material. He should be ~10mm/yr assuming he is healthy.

Gordon has played 78, 62,56, 9 (lockout not relevant), and 42 games in his 5 seasons, and he has a bad attitude. His could approach 3/45 with his talent, but his injury history makes it tough to pay him much more than 3/12.

I don't know if they will be called the Pelicans in everyday usage. The 'Cans, Da Cans sounds more New Orleansish.

On the plus side, if they suck we can call them the Pelicants.
