Or are the Lakers still paying the likes of Karl Malone, Ron Harper, and Horace Grant?

You'd be shocked at how many teams are still playing retired players. I won't say which team this situation belongs to, but there's a team, at least as of the end of FY 2012, that was still paying Peja deferred payments

This blows my mind.

Utah - Greg Ostertag - $6.3MM

LAL - Karl Malone - $1.8MM ; Ron Harper - $2.86MM; Horace Grant - $888K; Jim Jackson - $888K

Celtics - Shaq - $888K

That is the best gig ever. Haven't play ball in 10 years, but you still get paid.

Peja was still playing 2 years ago. John fn Salley hasn't played since 1996.

I've got a feeling that the Rockets are still sending paychecks to Matt Maloney....

It fits both parties involved if you think about it...the team gets to defer some money helping with the current year's salaries, and the player gets a built in retirement plan...

Wow, I can't believe that Orlando paid Horace Grant $14,000,00 per year in 1996. That's $20,000,000 in today's money...for Horace Grant.

Basketball has some horrendous contracts. I guess there's only so many tall guys around...flipping through some of the contracts, jeez.
