I had no idea New Orleans changed its name to the Pelicans. I have not been watching much NBA yet, and turned on the Mavs last night. It just seems wrong to have a team named the Pelicans, and it actually was quite humorous to hear the announcers keep referencing the Pelicans.

Seriously had no idea - been focused on football.
Now that you know, what do you think about the name? Let's all evaluate it. I'm not sure if we did yet or not.
They announced this name change over a year ago. Has nothing to do with being preoccupied with football.
That said, I think the name is pretty much awful. But at least it makes geographical sense, I guess

Never saw the announcement - I do have young kids which takes up most of my time at home - so maybe that qualities as a cave. I admittedly have not paid that much attention to NBA yet this year. The name seems USFL-like to me.

Coppell is basically a cave.
It's no worse than Lakers, knickerbockers, magic, thunder, wizards etc. It's because we aren't used to it. In 5 years it'll be second nature
It's far, far better than the other names they consider... rougarou, swamp dogs, mosquitos, and whatever the last one was.
I still think they should get Jazz back from Utah, who can then take their rightful place as the Utah Whites.
I think Pellies works fine, and as stated it makes geographical sense.
And yeah OP, a couple more headlines... the Nets moved to Brooklyn, Dwight Howard is a Rocket now, and the Clippers are the best team in LA.

Utah should be the Salt Lakers, give the Jazz back to New Orleans, Lakers name goes back to Minneapolis, make the current Lakers change their name to, oh, I don't know...the Aardvarks or something. While we're at it, give the Bullets name back to Washington.
