The problem with your scenario is that I'm not sure Gay can let his ego/selfishness go enough to be a third option. He kills teams because he is so inefficient, takes extremely difficult shots, doesn't create for other players, and basically kills a team's offense.
I admit he is talented and can look good if you just watch a game here or there. But there is a reason why no one wants him. The biggest evidence of this is Memphis trading him in the middle of the season when they had a contending team. A lot of people and so called analysts couldn't understand it, but anyone that looks into advanced efficiency stats knew why Memphis made the trade. Gay has always had awful efficiency stats, even before this year, mainly because he doesn't get to the foul line, takes low percentage shots, doesn't get assists, etc. This year, he is probably at an all time low given the fact he is shooting 37% from the field.
If you got a coach that could convince him to be a third option and become more efficient, sure I guess he could be a good third option. But I don't see that happening.
Basketball is going the baseball route of evaluating players with more of a moneyball/statistical approach. So more and more GMs are realizing that players like Gay who are very inefficient (no matter what their ppg is) are not who you want on your team.
