Kings get Gay, Aaron Gray and Quincy Acy while the Raps get John Salmons, Patrick Patterson, Chuck Hayes and Greivis Vasquez.

Seems like a salary dump for the Raptors and an aggressive move for the Kings.

Raptors realized that they were too close to making the playoffs thanks to the East being so craptastic, and wanted to make sure they were comfortably in the lottery.

Gay is a nice player, at about $9-11 million. His albatross contract is going to keep him on crappy teams looking to make the lottery.

Definitely was a salary dump by the Raptors. I wouldn't call Rudy Gay a nice player right now, although if he were in a situation like Monta he might be more apt to have better decision making.

There is a reason everyone wants to dump Gay. Talented, but he is not a nice player. His efficiency basically kills any team he goes to.

Gay's player option for next year. anyone think he's not picking that up?

Have the scales tipped so far against Rudy Gay that he's not even a nice player anymore? If he's your third best player on a reasonable deal, you can probably contend.

Yes he's shooting at career low and has a crazy high usage rate. But surely he can find a team where he clearly isn't the number one option (or two) and give that team a third scorer and small-ball big man.

The problem with your scenario is that I'm not sure Gay can let his ego/selfishness go enough to be a third option. He kills teams because he is so inefficient, takes extremely difficult shots, doesn't create for other players, and basically kills a team's offense.

I admit he is talented and can look good if you just watch a game here or there. But there is a reason why no one wants him. The biggest evidence of this is Memphis trading him in the middle of the season when they had a contending team. A lot of people and so called analysts couldn't understand it, but anyone that looks into advanced efficiency stats knew why Memphis made the trade. Gay has always had awful efficiency stats, even before this year, mainly because he doesn't get to the foul line, takes low percentage shots, doesn't get assists, etc. This year, he is probably at an all time low given the fact he is shooting 37% from the field.

If you got a coach that could convince him to be a third option and become more efficient, sure I guess he could be a good third option. But I don't see that happening.

Basketball is going the baseball route of evaluating players with more of a moneyball/statistical approach. So more and more GMs are realizing that players like Gay who are very inefficient (no matter what their ppg is) are not who you want on your team.

Pascal,

When he was with Memphis, he could have taken that third scorer role and only shoot threes and shots at the basket and focused himself on using his athletic ability to be a devastating defender.

But, he didn't, and that's not why he's being brought to Sacramento either (and that's not why he was brought to Toronto). That also does not match the amount that he's being paid.

But it's a problem when your third best player is making 17-19 million dollars...so more than your first and second best due.

The Rudy Gay trade is still probably a top 3 discussion topic in Grizzlies land.
