Every year there's a 12 seed that upsets a 5 seed. I'm trying to look through the brackets and see which one looks like the best chance of happening and I don't really see one that stands out. Anyone have an ideas?

SFA over VCU (seems like VCU was one of the teams in 12 seed that won recently, if I remember correctly)

Harvard over Cinci - I'm just not sure about this one.

ND Stat over OU - Has Oklahoma been any good this year? I know nothing about ND state...

NC St/Xavier vs St Louis - I really hate these play-in game situations.

I was close to picking NC State to best St. Louis. Glad I didn't. I picked ND State to beat OU, but I missed the Harvard/Cincy game

I've picked all the 12-5 matchups correctly so far. Hoping SFA beats VCU tonight to complete the sweep for me. VCU lost their 2nd leading scorer so that's why I switched my pick to SFA.

What is it about the 12 vs 5 match up that makes it a common upset? There is at least one 12/5 upset every year.

Could it be that the 5 seed is often a mediocre team in a major conference that gets paired up with a good team from a smaller conference?

The five seed is where you really start seeing a drop off in the quality of the teams. 12 seeds seem to always go to those really good team that play in bad conferences or teams like A&M when we beat Syracuse that made the tournament for the first time in years and was seeded way to low.

5-6 and 10-13 is an area where the committee has never done a very good job, in my opinion. It may not be possible to seed those teams well in any case, but 1, 2, and even 3 seeds are money -- before this year, 0, 7, and 17 losses respectively since going to at least 64. After that, the percentages start going down very rapidly to where 8/9 games are almost 50/50. Of course, 8 and 9 seeds are all pretty much the same with their seed often reflecting their conference and/or location.
