I can't get over it. He got outcoached by a wide margin in the series. I know he will probably be back but I don't think a team coached by him can win a ship.
Game 1- panicked when they went to Hack a Howard and took him out which changed the whole complexion of game 1 and the series. Refused to double a red hot Aldridge or bring in both big guys at the same time when Aldridge was clearly in NBA Jam level en fuego mode. Played Jeremy Lin.
Game 2-still comes in worth no plan on how to stop Aldridge. Does not address Harden and his lack of effort at all on D. Runs the same damn inbounds play every time. As soon as a player gets hot, like Howard at the beginning, he pulls them to the bench to keep his rotation the same.
Game 3- it takes him until game 3 on the road down 2 to 0 in the 3rd quarter to figure out he needs a spark of the bench and spacing.

I'm sick to my stomach already and can't even finish the other 3 games. This series is all on McHale.

yes, he got outcoached in this series. and yes, the Rockets could absolutely upgrade at head coach, and probably should. but I can't hang this entire series on him, not when harden played as badly as he did for all but the last game.

also, the Blazers played a fantastic series. Before the series, I thought the Rockets were the better team and even afterward, I still think that. But I think the Blazers played about as well as they're capable of, which is what you have to do in the playoffs. Aldridge and Lillard are beasts and they've got a pretty legit supporting cast. Hats off to them.

McHale has a team option for next year so the rockets don't need to even fire him.

I sat through 2 entire timeouts at midnight knowing that the only real option with 0.9 seconds was Lillard, because of his range. Beverly was the only option for guarding him. The only worse option than Parsons would have been Lin. So I give McHale credit for not putting Lin on Lillard.

JVG, George Karl, Vogel (if he gets fired).

upgrading would not be that difficult at all really.

Lionel Hollins

Also Lin would've been better on Lillard, at least he is quick enough to keep up. But they played that all wrong anyway, there was no switching on the play and Parsons couldn't keep up plus TJones was ****ing worthless on that play.

My point was that the only way to keep Lillard from shooting was to deny the ball. You have to force them to throw the ball inside the arc, imo, or take a 35 footer.

As a Mavs fan, I would fear Lionel Hollins in Houston. He would bring the needed defensive emphasis. However, Mike Dantoni and his offense could be great too.

Show us some concrete examples of how he was outcoached. For every example I can show you a similar mistake by the Blazers players and/or coaching staff. They can shoot. The Rockets can't. Its really that simple.

You truly believe McFail is a good coach. A championship coach?

So many to choose from. 1) Not making adjustments on Aldridge until game 3 was inexcusable. 2) not running the half court offense through Howard until game 5. We had zero ball movement on half court set until game 5. 3) having parsons cover Lillard at end of game 6. Beverly or Lin should have been on him. People say Lin would be worse but not true. Need a fast guy on Lillard not a 6 ft 9 forward (no excuse). 4). Regardless who was covering Lillard for last shot, McHale should have made sure whoever was guarding Lillard (parsons in this case) was lined up properly. Where parsons lined up was the worst position he could be in. Lillard was 25 feet away from ball. Parsons should have been between the ball and Lillard and almost halfway between. That is coaching and further proof parsons was wrong guy in floor. 5). We defended the 3 pt shot horribly and didn't rotate to the open man 80 percent of the time. They killed us on 3s because they knew they would have uncontested shots on 80 percent of them. That was all series long. I could go on and on

Our defense has been bad all season and it seemed to get worse after Sampson left. Defense can be greatly enhanced by effort/energy, something we rarely showed. There are a couple of good defenders on the team, but none of them have good technique and the teamwork is very poor. I also don't particularly like any defensive philosophy where the big man ends up away from the basket.

Our offense is clearly just modified street ball. It produces great highs and pathetic lows, all in the same game. In the regular season you could just knock a team out with one of those "highs", but that doesn't happen in the playoffs. The game is called tighter and teams play harder. It didnt help that we couldnt get many calls in transition because we just play as individuals in the halfcourt. Our best offense is the PnR with Howard/Harden but they never seem to want to run that, they prefer individual iso or post up.

On both sides of the ball the Rockets do not play well together as a team. That is the primary duty of the head coach.

Also, I was reading a grantland article that referenced this article about McHale's first year coaching:

http://www.rockymountainnews.com/news/2008/dec/08/nuggets-need-be-wary-minnesota-wednesday/?partner=RSS

This part is interesting:

quote:
"It was a learning experience," said Carter, who will see McHale and the Timberwolves on Wednesday at the Pepsi Center. "He didn't really know all the X's and O's, but he had a good assistant coaching staff that was helping him out with a lot of plays. He kind of let us run whatever we wanted.

"He was trying to draw plays, and it was like a little Etch and Sketch. Like a kid just messing around. . . . He just gave the clipboard to the assistant coaches sometimes."

McHale's assistants were Wittman, Sidney Lowe, Jerry Sichting and Don Zierden. Carter said they mostly ran practice.

"Practice, it was kind of funny," Carter said. "(McHale) didn't warm us up and just let us get to playing five-on-five. He'd just sit on the sideline . . . and the other coaches would be coaching."

Asked how the Timberwolves managed a decent record with a novice coach, Carter said, "All the guys just stuck together. We didn't want to get embarrassed."

I really dont feel McHale has gotten that much better at coaching and he is just kind of a puppet now.

i just don't get the timing of announcing his return.

i'd feel at least a little better about mchale returning if morey had taken a few days, evaluated who may or may not be available and whether any of those guys would be interested in the gig.

His offensive numbers are basically the same they have been for the last 6 years. Meanwhile, his defensive numbers were the lowest they have been in those same 6 years. Lowest amount of defensive rebounds, blocks. and steals since 06-07.

Give credit where due.
