Kidd, Kerr, now Fisher. Are all of these guys secretly students of the game to the degree they're more qualified than all the other coaches out there?

Most coaches were once players. HTH.

That's not a new trend. Tons of coaches are former NBA players. They know the game, how it's played and coached, and the people who hire coaches know them. Kidd changing out of his jersey into a head coach's suit is a little more unusual (partly because he's never come across as very smart), but coaches have always been mostly former players. I think 65-70% of coaches are ex-NBA players.

Most spend time being assistants before being handed the keys as head coach.

And Kidd may come across not very smart off the court, but he has always had a very high basketball IQ imo.

Does he have a high basketball iq or was he a basketball savant? Someone like Magic Johnson: a hall of fame player with a brilliant intuitive understanding of spacing and angles, but can't put together a coherent thought about the game off it and was canned immediately after posting a 5-11 record as a head coach.

You could be right. I should have said "As a player". Maybe it was just more instakes than smarts.

I guess we'll find out soon enough. Though I am not a huge fan of the Brooklyn roster.

I think the Brooklyn roster could have been solid for 1-2 years under a really good, experienced coach, but putting a first year guy at the head of that elephantine ensemble of overpaid former stars was not very smart no matter how much potential Kidd may have as a coach.

I think that's what's so surprising, that we're seeing people take off a jersey for a suit and/or put away the mic and go right into the HC role.

I don't understand the belief that Jason Kidd was a success this year, but I do know it is a copycat league, and the perception was there that he did well.

The team had the highest payroll, and would not have made the playoffs in the Western Conference.

And Derek Fisher will coach the Knicks until he realizes the team ain't doing crap this year, at which point he will use his daughter and family as an excuse to leave the team only to show up 6 weeks later coaching the Heat (as an assistant).

I think it's silly to be directly promoted from player to head coach. At least Steve Kerr had GM experience before becoming a head coach.

What? The guy who said this tonight?

Mark my words: Kawhi Leonard will one day be a star in the NBA!

Yeah, maybe in a few years he'll be capable of outplaying Lebron James on both ends of the court.
