quote:
DALLAS -- Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle apologized to Chandler Parsons for publicly criticizing the team's prized, free-agent addition's weight and conditioning after Friday night's preseason game.

"It was unfair and inappropriate to single out Chandler Parsons after the game Friday night," Carlisle wrote in a statement issued Sunday afternoon. "I have apologized to him and the entire team for this error in judgment. Not only is Chandler Parsons one of our best players, he is also one of our hardest working players and the kind of high-character person we strive to bring to our city and franchise.

"I also made it clear to our players and staff this morning that this type of bad example is not acceptable and beneath the dignity of a championship organization like the Dallas Mavericks.

Carlisle made a point after Friday's loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder to note that Parsons needed to shed weight. It was the second time since camp opened that Carlisle made critical comments about Parsons' conditioning.
"It just shows what kind of guy he is," Parsons said of Carlisle's apology. "We're in this together. Everybody makes mistakes, and he came to me as a man. We have a great relationship. It's in the past, and we're going to move forward. It's over with."
Parsons, who signed a three-year, $46 million contract with the Mavs this summer, reported to training camp at approximately 235 pounds after being listed at 215 pounds in his three seasons with the Houston Rockets. The Mavs want Parsons to play at 225 pounds.

"An increase of 18 to 20 pounds is just too much," Carlisle said Friday night. "We talked about it today. We talk about it a lot. He'll get there, but he looked tired out there and a little heavy-legged, and the extra 7 or 8 pounds aren't helping.

"I don't mean to call him out in public or ridicule him, but it's just a fact. He's an important guy for us. We just need him to get to his right conditioning and weight level so he can play his best because we're going to need him to play a lot of minutes over the course of 82 games."

Parsons, who intentionally bulked up this summer to prepare for spot duty at power forward, clearly did not appreciate the comments.

"His opinion of heavy is different than mine," Parson said Friday. "We kind of go at it every day about it. At the end of the day, I respect his opinion. After training camp, my weight fluctuates. I'll get it down."
On Saturday afternoon, Parsons posted a shirtless picture showing off six-pack abs on Instagram.

This reeks of Cuban meddling with the coach to protect his newest investment. I mean, If the coach plans to use Parsons in a running role, he wants him leaner. But Parsons obviously fancies himself a spot PF (Dirk?), instead of maintaining the weight needed to play his real role of SF.

Just odd that a coach would need to issue a public apology for calling a guy out who gained 20 pounds after signing a big new contract.

Yea, this is a bit odd. You'd think Carlisle would have the skins on the wall to freely criticize any player who showed up overweight.

While Parsons is good, he hasn't earned this kind of reputation (or paycheck) quite yet.

However, I hope he averages 10-5-2 over the next two years and everyone thinks of this contract as an albatross and Morey looks like a genius once again.

Predictably awesome. Parsons is the most overrated player in the league and he seems determined to prove it. Dirk should kick his ass.

It didnt take a genius to let Parsons go for that money. In fact, I'm 100% sure that Morey would have matched if he would have landed Bosh. So is he a genius or just lucky?

Correct me if I'm wrong... But couldn't Morey have kept Parsons this year for his original 850k contract? I may be misunderstanding his situation this summer...

Just interesting that last year he was an amazing player that we should be jealous of. Now that we have him, he is overrated and trash.

Are you new to sports fanaticism?

I'm sure Mav fans thought Parsons was overrated and now think he's awesome. Well....at least Cuban does.

Apparently parsons bulked up this summer so he could play more at power forward. Now he hasn't shot well at all so far including preseason. Interesting because Dirk tried bulking up one year and he blamed it for completely throwing off his shot and he quickly adjusted back to the old frame. This was the 08 season when Dirk had a slow start and many predicted Josh Howard would become the new superstar lol

Daryl Morey essentially traded Asik for Ariza, Terry, a potential lottery pick, and 2 future 2nd round picks, and he got shat on by everyone on this board this offseason because he struck out on Bosh. But that was quietly a pretty good offseason that he strung together

quote:
Terry the 37-year-old veteran guard whose best days are behind him was acquired from Sacramento in what was obviously a salary dump for the Kings. The Rockets received Terry and two potentially valuable future second round picks in exchange for the non-guaranteed contracts of Alonzo Gee and Scotty Hopson, two players who were never part of the Rockets' future on-court plans. (Quick tangent: With the trade of Gee and Hopson, Houston's total haul from the Omer Asik trade this past July is now Ariza, Terry, a potential lottery pick and two second rounders, making it one of the most underrated deals of the 2014 offseason.)

I hate Terry but he is better than Lin. Ariza was the steal of the offseason though, i always like his all around game.

I told you guys at the time that you were better off striking out with Bosh/Parsons. The Bosh half of that is more about the long run, but even this year Ariza is not much of a drop off from Parsons and he's a better fit with Harden/Howard. Bosh would have fit great, but their cap situation and bench would have been atrocious.

On the other hand, Morey might get high marks for salvaging a nice offseason, but he was the one who let one of the best values in the league walk and was only prevented from fielding a four-man team by the vagaries of the NBA salary cap.

I think Chandler Parsons is a great player for $850,000 per year. I think Chandler Parsons is extremely overrated for $14,700,000 per year. For comparison, LeBron James' Miami Heat salary was $14,500,000 per year.

This. He was a steal as a second round pick. Now he's overrated. That's the way it goes.

Salaries are often just a result of timing. Yes, in a vacuum, Parsons is probably overrated based on his salary. Looking at the players closest to him in salary there appear to be several overpaid players.

Roy Hibbert - 14.9
Eric Gordon - 14.9
Tyson Chandler - 14.8
John Wall - 14.7
Demarcus Cousins - 14.7
James Harden - 14.7
Chandler Parsons - 14.7
Al Jefferson - 13.5
Josh Smith - 13.5
Nene Hilario - 13
Eric Bledsoe - 13
