You hate to see it but at the same time Nolan just did not to seem to be having fun anymore with the organization changing his title, etc

Nolan just stated he will not be CEO of another MLB team.

In reality, I don't think he's been the CEO since last spring. I think he just played the part to avoid causing more of a disruption than the spring's news already did. This team has been JD and Company's for some time now.

He also doesn't strike me as the type that will come in and overshadow his son's work now that his son has the reins in Houston, so I don't think we'll see him any official, significant capacity for the Astros.

JD likes Nolan, a great deal. We have mutual acquaintances, and that's been mentioned several times.

Whether the two like each other or not, it was obvious there were two camps -- and JD got what he wanted in the sense that the Rangers decided he was the one worth investing the club's future in.

That's my point. He didnt.

The club might have had to choose going forward, but JD liked Nolan....liked having him around. I can tell you that with 100% confidence.

Not saying they agreed on everything, and the club might have gotten to a Y in the road.....but JD didnt want Nolan gone.

In the article on the rangers site, one of the owners says that Ryan still had final say on baseball decisions and was never stripped of that. Then it goes on to say that he was against trading CJ Edwards for Garza. Well Edwards got traded, so how did he still have final say?

I agree Danny D. Also, This was most certainly a JD vs Nolan. Their philosophies are different and it seems their was no give on either side on player evaluation. Props to the Rangers for not making this a mess in the media. Nolan didnt have a spot with the Rangers anymore or atleast a spot that he was somewhat comfortable with.

If Nolan does end up with Astros I'll watch them a lot more.. I'm a lot closer to Houston anyway.

I don't think it was necessarily JD vs. Nolan. However, I do think they've developed organizational talent over the past decade, and you keep talent by continuing to empower it. And to do that, the additonal empowerment is taken from somewhere - i.e. Nolan. In the end, I just don't think he was left with a level of empowerment that made it worth it to him to stick around. I'm sure there were disagreements in certain areas, but I doubt there was some major organizational philosophy difference. I largely just think the power within has grown where they looked to NOlan for a lot less. And Nolan doesn't strike me as the type that's going to stick around if he's not very involved.

Pretty much.

They both got along, and complimented each other well....but at some point, when you get to a fork in the road, you have to choose which way you're going, and the club did. It does suck for Nolan, but that doesnt mean JD wanted him gone.

I think this is interesting. The fact that Nolan was in the Rangers front office really played a role in your desire to support a team?

I'm not aware of any fans that stopped supporting the Sox over Theo's exit, but it did, I think, along with firing Francona, contribute to the apathy surrounding the club in '12. Next year may be similar for the Rangers.

Nolan wanted decision making abilities, but wasn't competent enough to be handed decision making abilities. There is not a single franchise in baseball that when asked if you would rather have Jon Daniels or Nolan Ryan making the decisions would choose the latter.

He was a figurehead and up until the last year or so before all the crap got dragged into the media, a damn good one.

This idea that Nolan was the reason that the young pitching has excelled is fairly baseless. If anything far too much credit has been given to Nolan and far too little has been given to Mike Maddux and the Rangers scouts.

Nolan was an important figurehead at a time that the Rangers needed one (2008-2009 and then Hicks selling the team). He's a guy that has many of the fan's trust, though honestly most of that trust in the casual fan's eye just stems from "him throwing all those no-hitters".

If Texas returns to being a legitimate pennant contender over the next few years, Nolan Ryan will be an after-thought.

The base of the Nolan admiration is that it was Nolan Ryan who made the personnel decision to bring in Mike Maddux, as well as a significant part of the Rangers scouting armada. Mike Maddux is the tangible manifestation of Nolan Ryan's ideas, visions, theories, whatever you want to call them of how the pitching staff would be coached and developed.

Being a guy with an office in the c-suite, being a guy in a human resources position, I don't know that you can ask for anything more from Nolan Ryan in regards to the pitching.

It may not be so much a philosophical thing, but there has and is a pretty significant divide within the organization. That's my feeling, at least, from the folks I know that are or have been within the organization.

Perhaps JD will replace them with similar philosophies and the results will be fine, but "Nolan's guys" that havn't been fired or havn't left on their own while the getting was good, certainly feel uncomfortable right now.

Uncomfortable employees make for uncomfortable results.

JD's crew needs to do some team building, or, sadly, just go ahead and complete the purge.
