Current status?

Tigers?

Mariners?

Cubs?

Others?

Who fills them?

With recent Mike Maddux comments, I have to believe he is going, going, gone...

I'd like to see Wash get 1 more year, regardless of how he does... then turn the Rangers over to Maddux.

Maybe give Wash a "special assignment?!"

If Washington does well, why would you want him to leave?

Maddux has to get an interview before he is going, going, gone, and outside of the Cubs two years ago, I have not seen him on anyone's interview list.

Say Wash does well next year, why would you want to turn the team over to an unproven coach that is looking for a "new challenge"?

Brad Ausmus- Tigers

The rangers wont promote Maddux. He's one of Nolan's guys.

The Mariners are going to have a tough time finding somebody of quality. They're probably have to either take someone of sub-500 past experience, or a newbie and hope he works out.

Managerial hires are unpredictable and really don't matter if you have talent. I'm not too worried as they have bigger problems.

Agreed, but when they suck (again), the manager will take more than his fair share of the blame (again), and the cycle shall continue.

Some Mariners interviewees:

Chip Hale - A's Bench Coach
Rich Renteria - Padres Bench Coach
Lloyd McClendon - Tigers Hitting Coach
Tim Wallach - Dodgers Third Base Coach
Ron Wotus - Giants Bench Coach

Not exactly splash material.

Ausmus would be a very good manager. Hope he gets the job that he is looking for.

The Seattle Mariners are down to four candidates for their managerial opening and still might consider a fifth.

The four finalists are Lloyd McClendon, Chip Hale, Joey Cora and Tim Wallach. The Mariners are still debating whether to conduct another interview with Rick Renteria, who recently underwent hip surgery. They also have yet to rule out another candidate, Dave Valle.

I'd suspect Jose Oquendo could get a shot somewhere, hopefully he's smart enough to stay away from Chicago.

Lloyd McClendon to the M's.

McClendon, 54, was the only candidate with previous Major League managing experience, having led the Pirates from 2001-05.

McClendon had a 336-446 record ...

Flipping through the stats of those Pirates seasons under McClendon...nothing egregiously poor pops out at me.

I think the Mariners made a good call in hiring a hitting coach.

And I'm all for basestealing coaches.

Not that I love the hire, but I don't hate it either. But, who did you expect? The only options are someone unproven (like both managers in the WS) or a retread. I would have loved Ausmus, but he's still a huge unknown.

That's exactly what I expected.

OK, I should have said what would you have hoped for? Pull Piniella, Leland or LaRussa out of retirement?
ramirez78

I would have went after Piniella if the rangers had an opening. This is because of the great discipline he has, he doesn't put up with anything. He demands excellence and doesn't accept failure(evidenced by how mad he gets)

It's the Mariners. I don't get my hopes up anymore.
