Maybe something of an overpay, but that's always the way things go in New York.

Great player when he's been healthy. The better the insurance policy New York has, the better the contract this was.

And there's an option for 8th year at $169 million. Wow

Ellsbury is a $21 million player?

a career .297 hitter that doesn't walk. Already 30 years old

He's good every other year. So, if history repeats itself, next year he'll ride the pine.

This history is repeating itself: when the Yanks can't beat the Sox on the field, they try to "beat" them off the field. Difference with Ells is that while he was liked in New England, he was not truly loved due to his exasperatingly long stints on the DL.

If Pence gets $17 million, why not give Ellsbury $22?

Very comparable players from an overall look. Knowing Pence was overpaid I think jacoby fit around 15-17 definitely not 20+

At these prices I would never go for a top-end free agent. Way too many ridiculous contracts.

In a vacuum, I agree with you but I think this also points to just how much money these teams are making. Most MLB teams are more than capable of absorbing one or two of these bad contracts.

Agree with Macarthur. It's largely just a sign of how much money from tv deals are pouring into franchises these days (and/or are anticipated to pour in). The bar of what constitutes a crazy deal has risen significantly.

I'd rather pay a mega deal, then a deal like Ellsbury. Always hurt, and very overrated. Give me a stud pitch at 30M per vs. some aging, glass of a player..

He's a good player and they have the cash so why not...it does, however, validate that their farm system is mediocre on it's best day.

Cashman, therefore, is the most overrated GM in sports.

there are plenty of GMs that spend and win zilch

see the tigers and cubs and mets and rangers. All have had sky high payrolls at some point in the last 5 years and all have a grand total of zero titles

Tigers and Rangers have plenty to show for the past several years. Along with the Cubs, they have pretty good or great systems.

Meanwhile Cashman's main function has been to serve as the Steinbrenner's pen and you didn't really refute that because you can't.

I never said cashman was some genius farm system GM, but he's won titles. You can't spend your way to 4 titles. You have to have the right mix of big and home grown name players to win. He's done it over and over.

By simply writing checks. Meanwhile, the farm system has floundered and they've made no other personnel moves that really distinguish him and/or have made a significant impact on the team.

For the resources he has available to him, Cashman has either well underachieved or is the GM by title only and not allowed management flexibility.

No other scenario is logical.

If there is a player they want, they get. Period. They will win that battle EVERY time. No one will even enter a bidding war with them, unless the intention is to drive up the Yanks spend.

And, as if im almost defending the guy, it's probably ultmately on the Steinbrenner's for not demanding a better personnel department.

They all know, including Cashman, that if things go bad they'll just spend their way out.

It is impossible to defend. Deflect, obfuscate, apologize for? Seen it, endlessly.

There is only 1 reason they paid what they did. Ells was a Sox. If Ells played in Washington DC, he'd still be on the market.

The Yanks front office looks like Russell from Survivor. Big pain in the ass, but not playing to win.

I might argue that's 1B...1A is the Sox won the WS and the Yanks were a middling team.

Didn't something similar lead to the CC, Tex, AJ spending spree?

They pretty much have acknowledged that with one hell of a draft in 2013, and hopefully more in the future. They were extremely close to firing the entire scouting department but just fired a few guys and gave them a directive to do better or they're all gone in 2014. I don't really care about giving up a first and second in 2014, as if you're going to part with the first, give up all you can in one draft rather than deal with losing a first every year. The Yankees will gain a first next year with granderson leaving, too, so it's ok. The farm system has had some bright spots but it's not consistent at all and they know that. Hopefully that improves as we go along.

they missed the playoffs in 2008 and went on a spending spree

someone hand me a cry laugh. The fact that CC came from the freaking brewers stopped them.... Or that Toronto blue jay AJ Burnett....yeah, great players from smaller markets, the Yankees don't care about them

Dodged the point Token.

Ellsbury's value to the Yankees goes way beyond his on field. The Yanks did this to piss off Boston. That was the point. He isn't worth that contract for performance alone. If he played for KC, he'd been offered half that contract.

This!

Seems to be the MO here as of late, Youk and now mega contract for Ells.

Cherington seems to be on target with HIS particular formula. 1-3 year deals mixed in with a couple of larger contracts i.e. Pedroia.
I think with the Sox front office getting burned with Gonzo & Crawford and their slumping performances has proved a valuable lesson.

Good on Jacoby for getting the money, but not one person/media source has said it's money well spent.
