Really good player. Numbers are going to be stupid, but that's the market now.

7 years and ungodly money to a 31 year old outfielder.....

130 mill is what Evan is tweeting.

Less than what NYY offered.

I think they were in a position where they pretty much had to get him. Glad they pulled it off.

Decent Fangraphs writeup on Choo.

Per Passan he gets a limited no trade clause...no options or opt-outs.

7 years, 130 million.

Remember, Dallas Ag, only the Yankees ever give outfielders 100M dollars.

Not a fan of giving a 31 year old outfielder a huge chunk of money but hey we had to do something for offense this offseason and JD has certainly done that

Didn't think this would happen. That's a lot of years for a 31 year old. Don't love this.

Texas could sign Ruth, Mantle, DiMaggio, and Cy Young, and there would always be someone who would beetch about it...

Don't like the years, but unfortunately that's the market. No question they're a better team in the front part of the contract with him. In a world where Scott Feldman gets 3/$30MM, this deal is positively sane.

3 for 30 is a while lot different than 7 for almost 140.. especially when you consider that 30 million won't do the slightest thing to hamper the Astros in future negotiations.

But I do like this deal for the rangers. You lose a ton of power from Cruz to shoo.. but you gain more in my opinion.

@gfraley: Shin-Soo Choo had 112 walks with Cincinnati this season. Last Ranger with 100-plus walks: Rafael Palmeiro, in 2002.

Choo replaces Kins power just fine, while Prince will be an upgrade over Nellie's power - especially as a lefty in the Ballpark. And Choo brings a much better approach to the plate than Kins, especially on the road where Kins has been terrible forever. Choo Ops and obp consistently 40-50 points above Kins and should only grow with Choo getting the Ballpark boost that has practically made Kins' career.

And just like I loved with Prince, I really like the value of lefty bats in the Ballpark with the RF porch and jetstream.

Lots of years and money, but all of the new tv contracts have raised the bar. It's either do it while you have a window where your starting pitching staff is strong and very reasonably priced, or in a few years asking yourself what could have been.

Ken Rosenthal said the lack of state income tax in Texas means that New York would have had to offer 147 million to equal the 130 that Texas offered. I guess that explains why he turned down the 140 from NYY.

Really like this move. This team has 2, maybe 3 more seasons to get it done. If a guy can walk over 100 times in a season who cares how old he is. Difference is the yankees HAVE to overpay for guys because they don't have a young nucleus or farm. I don't mind a team like the rangers that overpays if they are in a solid position to do so.

Another byproduct of jayson Werth's still ridiculous deal

"Choo's agent, Scott Boras, had been pursuing a deal bigger than Jayson Werth's seven-year, $126 agreement with the Washington Nationals three years ago, and succeeded in getting it from the Rangers."

#'s say he's worth it in the current market.

Mind you the current market is absolutely ridiculous. But I guess that's the way baseball go.

Not sure what to think. I think it is too many years, too much money and I'm not sure I have a good feel for Choo. I guess we'll have to let this play out.

Based on what? Most of this team is locked up through 2016. That's 3 years.

After that in 2017:
Darvish (30), Harrison, Holland and Perez
Fielder, Andrus, Profar, Choo

2018:
Harrison (32), Holland (31) and Perez (27)
Fielder (34), Andrus (29), Profar (25), Choo (35)

5 years out and they still have a pretty solid core, which is relatively young. This is where Fielder and Choo start to become real concerns.

However, being able to project out your roster for 5 years is pretty amazing. The Rangers have some talent coming, which you'd like to think they can add 2-3 pieces in the field (Alfaro:20\A+\C, Rougned Odor: 19\AA\SS). Add Nick Williams, Brinson and Mazara...

They certainly have the stable to add 2-3 players on the pitching staff (Tepesch, Font:23\AAA\Cl, Luke Jackson:21\AA\SP).

The Rangers have depth at all levels. Their weakest area was AAA\AAAA. They've brought enough guys along, and have made serious trades the past couple years that they are thin at the top, but they have some depth on the way.

What are his stats at RBiA? He's always killed the rangers, but does he hit them better at RBIA or away

It's not negligible, but the taxes aren't for the full salary each year. For pro athletes, the states (& NYC) tax their pay per game, so a Ranger still pays taxes on their game check in NY, CA, and other states with a state income tax, but don't pay any for the 81 games in Arlington, adding the Astros to the AL West actually helps the players tax wise.

Well, that was the point, that the difference NY offered was basically what the tax difference would be when calculated correctly.

I don't see Tanaka getting posted. I am, however, interested in what happens to David Price... I could see Moreland, Odor, Choice, plus being involved. I just don't want to lose Profar or Alfaro.
Gerg MarmaIard
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I think Alfaro is the least available guy in the entire organization.
