How long do you want to ignore this user?
Ranger fans??? Does starting rotation seem as iffy to anyone else?? Yu, then Perez, everyone else coming back from injury or out til middeason. Harrison ?? Ogando better in pen? I think Rangers should expand payroll and bring in someone else..even if it means selling naming rights to stadium. Not necesarily Ubaldo but there are some quality arms unsigned at this point. Discuss!!

They won't get ubaldo. Will be a 5th starter type like Jerome Williams

It won't be Ubaldo unless the Rangers are in more trouble with pitching that we know. Even beyond the loss of Holland.

3yr/$39M + Draft compensation?

No thank you.

VERY Confident:
- Darvish
- Perez

- Ogando: I think he is a solid SP... but his health concern grows now that Holland is gone.

- Tepesch: IMO, 4.84 ERA for 25+ GS eats lots of innings and keeps the Rangers in games.

They have some additional internal options that would be similar to Grimm\Tepesch.

Harrison and Holland should be good to go in 2015-2017. Signing Ubaldo through 2015-2016 is unnecessary for what he offers. A bridge for 1 year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but giving up the draft pick would be like trading:
2013: Travis Demeritte (our #9 2014 prospect) or Akeem Bostick
2012: Joey Gallo (our #5 2014 prospect) or Collin Wiles or Jamie Jarmon or Nick Williams (our #4 2014 prospect).

Giving up our draft could mean nothing... or it could be an up and coming stud.

There are plenty of other SPs I'd take over Ubaldo, straight up. Add the cost $13M/yr AND a draft pick... no way.

@Token.... Are u meaning Ameriquest... Which the Rangers terminated that agreement 5,6,7 yrs ago...or has another deal slipped by me?
@Dallas... Im kinda lost on the compensation problem.... Giving up draft pick and 100 mil was ok for Choo but giving up another pick and $40 mil for what could be the Rangers #2 for 3 yrs is unacceptable??? Call me crazy but unless Harrison is able to start the season and start strong.... Tepesh, Grimm and whoever is # 5 dont awe me in the least!

Grimm is gone.

WOAH!!! Tap the brakes big guy... One good year doesn't return him to glory, IMO.

Yes, he has a 3.92 career ERA... but he was very pedestrian in 2011 & 2012... and a career 1.345 WHIP.

Without question best he'd be is their #4, IMO.

Darvish - Perez - Ogando (Career 3.12\1.136).

I have more confidence in Ogando staying healthy, than Ubaldo duplicating last year.

After this year, the rangers have:
Darvish-Perez-Ogando-Harrison-Holland.

Harrison will likely contribute in 2014... likely 2015 and 2016. Holland may not contribute in 2014... but by 2015 and 2016 should be back.

So, your argument is Ubaldo would NOT be the Rangers #2 in 2015 and 2016, but more likely not cracking the Rangers rotation in 2015.

Luke Jackson (22) will likely be talked about in ST 2015. He ended the season in AA.

Alex Gonzalez (22) will be sniffing the bigs in 2016.

Point? SP is not as huge a hole as OF was.

For OF, we needed help. Our biggest 3 prospects were all in Myrtle Beach.

Choice was an option. Engel Beltre stumbled but finished strong in Winter ball. Leonys Martin left Winter ball to get dental work...

I wasn't huge on the Choo signing... so I'm not defending it... but I think you can see why it was done. Rios is a club option after this year. Martin is signed through 2015. So, at a minimum, we have no real OF after 2015. We now have Choo (1 for 3 positions).

Even in 3 years, we don't have the OF help we'll need.

SP - we'll have 8-9 options in 2016, for 5 spots. AND... the FA SP available after 2014 is quick deep.

Gonzales will be up long before 2016.
He's advanced. College pitcher. May even get a cup this year.

So basically just piss away 2014???
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Who said piss it away?

I said there were better options. Just don't give me Roy Oswalt or Derek Lowe. If we are going with a suspect SP... save the money and the pics.

Tepesch wasn't ready but was needed in 2013. He was serviceable. If he can improve, he'll be plenty good as our #5 in 2014.

Ross and Scheppers are both looking at being in the rotation.

With ALL the SPs who look to be available after the season... there should be some good ones available around the trade deadline. If you want to chase talent with prospects... give up Luke Jackson or Alex Gonzalez in a mid-season trade, and save the $13M for 2015 and 2016 for signing a FA after the season.

I'm not saying we'll get a better prospect in the draft than either, but giving up a prospect, Millions and a roster spot for 3 years... on a suspect pitcher?! No thanks.

They were done spending as of Choo. Ubaldo isn't that great of an option...think Garza but not as good.

The keys here are Harrison and Perez...if Perez doesn't fall off a cliff and Harrison stays healthy, they'll be fine. If either of these things don't happen, it's a dogfight for one of the WC's.

Rosenthal mentioned this morning that a guy like Capunano could still be in play. That's the level of guy they still may bring in.

I could handle something like this:

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/02/rangers-in-talks-with-tommy-hanson.html

Depending on terms... I'd rather take a flier on this guy, than an expensive multi-year deal for Ubaldo.

Hanson appeared to have nothing last season. I don't see him helping much.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
He is 27.

His BB/9 were up... his SO/9 were terrible. For sure he struggled.

In fact, there were some games he was flat out awful.

5 BB\4 ER against Oak (4.2 IP).

9 ER in 2 games against Houston (11.1 IP)?

Outside those 3 games?!

44 ER in 73.0 IP becomes
31 ER 61.2 = 4.52 ERA.

He even sucked in the minors. But, if we can get a small fix... I'd love to see him return to his upside. Maybe a 2yr \ $15M deal with some incentives?! No clue what they are discussing... but that gives where I start to put the risk\reward. I want a 2nd year as an owner because if he works out his issue with us, he becomes cheap in 2015... where as if he struggles, you may be able to move him during the season to a team not in contention who thinks they can fix him.
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
And to your point... he helps if he can keep Luke Jackson and Alex Gonzalez in the minors... and gets us 10-15 GS and keeps us in the game.

Takes pressure off Tepesch.

Gives us a runway to find out if Harrison, Holland and Colby will can contribute in 2014... without feeling like they need to hurry\rush.

Arroyo 2yrs 23.5 to Arizona... Woulda filled Rangers hole!!!!
DallasAg 94
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Would have... if the Rangers were in the NL...

He and Burnett were both destined for NL.

Hanson may, as well... but I think Hanson has fewer options.

Hanson was the man for a couple of years. Be a great guy for anyone to take a flier on.
