2015 payroll should increase significantly:

Astros owner Jim Crane says that the club's payroll could increase by about $20MM next year, as Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports. Increased payroll availability does not mean that the team will use that cash, Crane cautioned, though he sounded willing to spend if it makes baseball sense.

"I think somewhere around [$20MM]," said Crane. "We're not going to spend it to spend it. We're going to try to spend it effectively and you know if we need to stretch a little, we'll stretch a little. If there's not a good reason to do that, we won't do that. But you know we'll continue to move up."

Houston started 2014 with about $50MM in payroll on the books, meaning that the team could move into the $70MM range next year. The club has less than $18MM guaranteed heading into the offseason, but will need to pay arbitration raises to several players, including Dexter Fowler, Jason Castro, and Chris Carter.

Crane added that the club's television rights fee situation will have a major role in setting future spending. "A couple of years ago we only got paid half of our rights fees," he explained. "This year we didn't get paid anything and this year hopefully we go back and get something paid for our coverage and it'll have a big impact on what we'll be able to spend on the team." Specifically, Crane indicated that a nine-figure budget could be in the cards depending upon how the TV situation shakes out.

In terms of where that money might be allocated, Crane said that GM Jeff Luhnow would look to "add some more cornerstones." As the team continues to work to add talent to its developing young core, Crane indicated that it might be expected to sign two or three major league free agents this year.

9 figures? I'll believe it when I see it.

It was a little over $50MM this year, so it could get as high as $70MM in 2015. I've seen the Astros projected salary commitments to be between $40-45MM after arbitration. We still have to add a starter, bat, and build a bullpen with $25-30MM. Looks like Luhnow will be bargain bin shopping, and the fans can forget chasing any of the top free agents.

Didn't watch the Astros this year but did Castro do that well to get a raise?

Castro dropped around 50 points from his average, but the mlb arbitration process will still net him a raise.

No Pablo. No ace. Probably will spend 10mil on another Feldman type. another 5 mil on a bullpen guy. And another Dexter Fowler level guy.

I've been one of the biggest supporters of luhnow and co.. but they were the ones who pointed to 2015 all these years. It's time to do something.

I give them credit. They did spend money last year. It was just on a sub-par Feldman, didn't play a game Crain, Qualls, and hurt most of the season Albers.

I don't see them wanting to give out a giant contract(over $100 million). Which will get us out of the running with a lot of guys.

Watch us end up with a Kendrys Morales type guy

MLB trade rumors did an extensive write up on the Astros offseason outlook last night:

I keep going back and forth on whether or not I like the Cosart trade, but after reading the mlbtraderumors article I think I'm going to stay in the "I like it" camp. We were able to trade away from a position of strength (I know it's a stretch to call our pitching staff a position of strength, but with the way that Keuchel and McHugh played this year I think it is) and pick up Marisnick who is a Major League player (1.4 WAR in only 50 games) and Moran who may be a long-term solution at 3B in a year or so. It also cleared the way for some more of our pitching talent to get some looks; guys like Folty (assuming he ends up starting) and Tropeano.

Not what I was wanting to hear. We really could use a new 3rd baseman, and this doesn't give me a lot of hope for the bullpen

Should the Astros trade for Josh Donaldson?

http://houseofhouston.com/2014/10/06/houston-astros-trade-josh-donaldson/

That trade scenario seems steep but necessary for a player like Donaldson. But I say do it. Just switch Moran and Ruiz.

No ****ing way do I give up Michael Foltynewicz, RHP; Domingo Santana, OF; Rio Ruiz, 3B; Nick Tropeano, RHP; PTBNL (J.D. Davis, 3B) for a guy who is about to be 29

What's the big rush to contend next year? We have spent years building this system and I'm not one who wants to give away a chunk of it for a player like Donaldson. Let's let our players develop into studs and create a dynasty. Even with Donaldson we aren't playoff contenders Imo

If Folty can pick up 1 more solid pitch or 2 more decent ones, he can be really freaking good. He had a decent amount of success just living on his fastball this season since his call up, but he's got tons of potential

Roster moves:

After letting Jorge De Leon go on a waiver claim, the Astros have cleared three additional roster spots with a series of moves today. As the club announced in a press release, it has declined its option over reliever Matt Albers and outrighted first baseman Jesus Guzman and lefty Rudy Owens. Houston's 40-man roster now has four vacancies, but as the team notes it has four players stashed on the 60-day DL.

I think that's way too much for Donaldson. Didn't he have the most errors by a third baseman last year?
