I am totally embarrassed and ashamed of the example I displayed for the kids.

I am not a coach for the team. I was outside the field just watching 9-10 year olds.

The opposing coach was being a jerk all night. He was screaming at the umpire most of the game about the strike zone. Every time one of our players stole a base, he screamed that they left early and we were cheating. Then on one call, he threw down his hat and screamed, "Bullsht!" I finally came unglued and yelled that he should be ejected. Every league I have ever been associated with has a zero tolerance policy for profanity...plus he had been a jerk all game already.

Well, this leads to him telling me to shut up and his teenage son (who happens to be their bookkeeper who has been relaying erroneous pitch counts) comes over and tells me to stop yelling at his dad. Then he pushed me in the chest. I just put my hands up.

Then a police officer came and told me to leave. The jerk coach comes over and tells me he is glad his son pushed me because that is what he should do to someone who is mouthing off to his dad.

I left immediately. I am a total idiot for stooping to that guy's level. I think I should speak to the team at their practice and tell them that what I did was wrong no matter how much I disagreed with the way the other coach was acting. I ended up acting just like him except without profanity, and there really is no difference there.

It happens.... not to me... but it happens.

Don't let it bum you. You recognize it was wrong and hopefully learn from it.

Report the coach to the league. The umpire or whoever was supervising all the games should have removed him before that point. When I was an umpire, I had a coach removed for the same behavior. While you may have lost your cool, I wouldn't say you stooped to his level. Guy sounds like a grade-A tool and shouldn't be coaching little league (or, apparently, having children). And an apology might be nice, but not necessarily needed.

Can you give us an idea where this happened? I'm not interested in who you are, but more interested in if it's College Station LL.

Not CS LL. CS LL would have handled this guy appropriately very early in the night.

I don't understand why you were asked to leave when this kid decided he needed to get physical. I don't see that there's really anything to apologize about from your post.

I've coached my kids softball teams for the past 6 years or so, and it can be hard as hell to keep your mouth shut so I can absolutely sympathize. I don't think an apology to the team is really necessary, although a conversation with your coach might not hurt.

But when either an opposing coach or fan clearly crosses the line (and a profanity hat slam absolutely qualifies) and the ump doesn't act, your coach needs to man up and approach the umpire about it. Gotta let the ump handle it ultimately, but calmly approaching him for a conversation in an attempt to prod him into action doesn't hurt. He may not necessarily act even then, but trying to handle it yourself will often only escalate things. I'd also report it to the league coordinator after the game (whether the ump acts or not). They need to be coaching the ump to be more assertive and control those situations.

Report the coach to the league

This. We had a coach in our LL who, by the sounds of it...was not as big a tool as your guy, was reported by some of the parents. He must have gotten the message, because he doesn't yell and scream at his players anymore.

You handled it a lot better than I would have, I'm afraid to say.

It really saddens me how culturally numb to profanity American society has become.

We don't want our kids to hear it ONLY because we don't want them to hear it. Adults are not offended by this language at all. Hence, what OP did in reaction to it, appears unwarranted.

Yeah Chowdah. The fans of the other team were saying things such as, "Like you don't ever cuss in front of your kids!" Guess what. I don't. I never heard my old man cuss, and I have never cursed in front of my kids. It isn't that hard if you have half of a brain to control your mouth. If you can't, you either don't care or you are just an imbecile...maybe both. Whether or not you think it is a problem to curse in front of kids, berating volunteer officials is a poor example for the players, and profanity is grounds for automatic ejection.

Wow. What trash. You definitely had an uphill battle on your hands. Again, I don't think you have anything to be ashamed of or to apologize for. It's more just a matter of approach when dealing with more trash than will fit in your trashcan.

Sounds like the apple didn't fall far from the tree. Defending his p.o.s. Teenage son for pushing an adult at a flippin' youth baseball game only validates the guy is a grade A loser.
