I always respected him. I remember a day game at Wrigley in 1989 when my Astros were ahead 9-0 and his Cubs came back to win. One of the best games I've ever seen. Rafael Ramirez hit a grand slam that day and drove in 5 or 6 runs, but it wasn't enough.

thumbs up for a man who spent what seems like an eternity in baseball.

Ha, I remember watching that game. It was my birthday and I cried when the cubs came back and won.

I felt like crying, we were chasing the Giants and needed the win.

Just saw the clip of the Rangers tonight where they had a moment of silence in honor of Zimmer.

Very nice to see that.

6 decades in baseball. I always loved Don no matter what uniform he was wearing.

It's a shame most people will only remember this.

This is a great article by Verducci. As one of the Musers said this morning, Zimmer was like the Forrest Gump of baseball. This paragraph alone is nuts:

quote:
Zimmer met Babe Ruth (in 1947), was a teammate of Jackie Robinson (1954-56) and played for Casey Stengel (1962). He was in uniform for some of the most iconic teams in history: the team that lost the most games ('62 Mets) and the team, including postseason play, that won the most games ('98 Yankees). He was in uniform for the only World Series championship for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1955), one of the most famous World Series home runs (Carlton Fisk's shot in 1975), one of the most famous regular season home runs (Bucky Dent in 1978), the Pine Tar Game (1983), the first night game at Wrigley Field (1988), the first game in Rockies history (1993), and all three perfect games thrown at Yankee Stadium (Don Larsen, David Wells and David Cone).

What a life!

The fact that he bragged that he never got a paycheck in his life, that didn't involve baseball, is just plain amazing!

I can remember him managing the mighty Rangers. They had a pretty good team too.

That SI article details one of my favorite things about Zimmer. After losing in the play-offs on year, George Steinbrenner called all coaches to his office to chew them out. He opens the meeting with "If anyone thinks they are doing everything they can to help the Yankees win, you can leave." Don gets up and walks out on The Boss.

I'll be satisfied if I know half as much about baseball as he did.
