The College Station Cougars will play the Argyle Eagles tomorrow for the 3A State Championship. The game is at 6:30 at UCFU Disch-Falk Field in Austin.
The Cougars defeated the Lubbock Cooper Pirates tonight in a thrilling 9-8 victory in 8 innings. After trailing 3-0 going into the 5th, the Cougars scored 5 runs in the B5 to take a 5-3 lead. The Pirates came back though, tying the game at 5 in the T6. The Cougars retook the lead at 7-5 but Cooper scored three runs in the T7 to retake the lead. The Cougars tied the game up in the bottom frame to send the game to extras. The Cougars worked out of a jam in the T8 and then loaded the bases with no outs in the B8. Mathew Bennett then hit a single to score Ryan Johnson from 3rd base to win the game 9-8.
With the win, the Cougars improved to 34-6-1 on the season, as they have held the top spot in all polls this season. A loaded team top to bottom without a single senior on the roster. Once again, this team is rich in talent with 6 D1 commits:
- Ryan Johnson, OF (2015): TCU
- Nick Kennedy, P (2015): Texas
- Baylor Rowlett, C (2015): Oklahoma State
- MacGregor Hines, P (2015): Florida
- Cody Staab, OF (2015): Rice
- Kyle Richardson, P (2016): Texas A&M
The Cougars will now take on the Argyle Eagles who beat Sinton in their Semifinal Game 5-1.
If anyone wants to make their way out to Austin tomorrow evening, I highly recommend the trip. You will be in for one heck of a ballgame featuring two of the top teams in 3A. Beware of the Cougar Raggies though, the CSHS student section, who keeps the game entertaining with their heckling and fun cheers. If you cannot make it out to the ballpark, the game will be broadcasted on KZNE 1150 The Zone.
