[Luhnow] talked to [Marlins GM Dan Jennings] and said we had interest in Stanton. DJ said he doesn't think he'll trade Stanton and the only deal he could think of from us that would work would be Springer and Correa. JL said that would not work. JL posited a deal around Cosart and Deshields.

Cosart & DeShields for Stanton would have been nuts. I can see why we didn't do Springer & CC, but that would have been interesting.

Cosart and Deshields for Stanton would be pure traderape...

Now I see how Luhnow traded Lee. Someone will eventually bite at a ridiculous offer.

From what I'm seeing they are real and the Astros' database was hacked.

Kinda sucks they were hacked and may not be good PR with other teams but as a fan it's kinda cool to see the behind the scenes scenarios that never make it to the public.

Who knows how much was "embellished" or if that is just them putting doubt out there to cover their ass one some of these.

This is my vote.

Ass covering, although I don't think any of it is bad. And it's not like they were intentionally talking out of school on this.

That silly-ass "counter" was surely met with nonstop laughter on Miami's end of the phone.

Yeah, but a lot of it you just don't want your players to know you're putting them on the block if the deal doesn't happen. It's part of the game but you prefer keeping it hidden if/when possible. Some orgs are great some suck or don't care.

Can't blame a GM for trying to improve his team.

Right, but everyone knows GM's are working deals. I also think it is a different dynamic with a building team vs established veterans that have skins on the wall there, of which the Astros have zero. It was also reaffirmation of their faith in some of their players/prospects. And again, it's not like word got out about a player being moved before it actually happened.

As a Ranger fan it's depressing that the white sox GM said Leury Garcia was untouchable.

I've got to imagine that MLB will crush the Cardinals for this...this would be tantamount to an NFL team hacking radio signals to listen in on in-game sideline feeds. If that was ever found out, the NFL would nuke that franchise back to expansion status through firings, fines, lost draft picks, etc.

As it pertains to baseball where scouting/development/front office strategy is the biggest part of the game, this would be analogous.

Astros get to pick any 3 players in the Card organization, Cards have to keep paying the players while they play fo the Astros and we call it even! Sounds fair, no?

How would they get access to the database? I get the part that they used his passwords from his time with the Cardinals, but how would they get access to the website? Shouldn't the website have been on the Astros' intranet site that would not be accessible offsite without VPN-Ing onto the corporate server?
AggieJ2002

That is why it was more than just a simple password hack. They hacked into the network, and then probably used the passwords to help (though the passwords were probably irrelevant at that point as they could've gotten past those as well once they got in the network.

Why would you believe it is any more difficult to use his credentials to login to a VPN than it would a database server?

I'm in meetings this week traveling, but look up houstonastros.com (or whatever their domain is), look at their pointers... likely have one for something like vpn.houstonastros.com... use his credentials... profit.
