Austin Jackson and Smyly heading out.

Mariners are the third team get Jackson and send Franklin.

Boy and, so far, DET didn't give up a huge haul.

Surprised TB couldn't go better than this somehow?

Guess we'll see what else SEA or DET contribute to the deal.

Was watching the Tigers game -- I've never seen a player actually pulled out of the field for a trade mid-inning until now.

So far that's all TB is getting...Smyly and Franklin.

Seems WAY WAY low.

Ya...that does seem low.

What would the Ranger equivalent of Smyly and Franklin be?

Is it customary to pull a player from the field if a trade happens during a game? I knew that when a player is traded in the day and it's a night game they don't usually play but I've never heard of changing up everything in the middle of a game.

The second the trade is sent to the league office, the player isn't part of his original team anymore and can't participate further from them. Once teams agree, even before formally official, you'll see plays pulled every time, to make sure they don't get hurt in the interim.

Tigers also give up a A short stop prospect who goes to TB.

Still a terrible haul for Friedman.

It has happened many times that the player traded exits the game.

Best I could compare...
Luis Sardinas (21.076) - 6'1"/150; .288\.329 OBP in 72 PAs.
Nick Franklin (23.151) - 6'1"/195; .214\.291 OBP in 464 PA.

Nick Franklin is a utility IF at best. Luis Sardinas has proven at 21... he could be a legit MIF.

Drew Smyly? That's a hard one. At 25, I'm not sure if he is going to be a SP or RP. I would think if you gave up Sardinas... you'd give up Tepesch or Martinez to complete the trade.

TB also gets Willy Adames (18 @ A: .269\6 HR \ 3 SB in 400 PA in A ball)

I don't see TB's return on this...

It'd have been worth Sardinas and Tepesch... but not if we aren't in contention.

If Hunsicker was still part of the Rays FO...they don't get trade raped for Price

Thanks! And that's how I learned something today.

I'm not huge on Franklin, but not sure that's accurate. Dude killed it when he entered the league last year and dominated AAA this year. He's sucked when called up this year but also hasn't played regularly.

He's definitely not a SS though. He could be a decent 2B at some point.

I believe Hunter Pence was traded during a game and was pulled out. I remember the tv showing him hugging his teammates in the dugout.

Tampa got crap in return for Price.

Before this deal, I thought it was Oakland's WS to lose. But now, Detroit is the better team.

will be interesting to see how Price does in Detroit. Former ray and devil ray players have a long history of flopping once they leave the no-pressure, no-spotlight environment in Tampa.

from Upton to Shields to Garza to Kazmir to Pena to Crawford...it's a long list of buyer's remorse

Pulled from the lineup while in the dugout, sure.

I'll contest that a player being pulled from the field during the middle of an inning has not happened many times -- it's the first I've seen it in all of the years I've watched baseball.

Upton and Crawford for sure.

Not so sure on the pitchers.

Over the past two seasons, Shields is 14th in MLB in WAR for SP.

Kazmir = 31st in WAR.

Garza = 41st in WAR.

Just in 2014?

Kazmir is 24th and Garza is 39th.

So i'd say Shields has been as expected, Kazmir has actually overperformed, as he was a scrap heap guy when CLE picked him up, and while Garza hasn't been an ace by any means, he's been high serviceable.

PS = on Upton, 24th in NL in OF WAR @ -.1. Just an awful, awful signing by ATL which is a team that usually knows better.

Re: Price, disappointing return. Some wonder if ownership ordered a trade at all costs or if there was other similar non-baseball reasoning.

Re: former Rays. Corleone pretty much covered it already, but I would add that the Rays tend to sell early on their younger players and it may just be a case of those players' production naturally declining. They bring in older players on 1-2 year deals to perform in specific roles and rely on using them wisely as opposed to making them part of the backbone of the team. When they do perform, they leave for better deals and go back into decline.

Except Carlos Pena. They kept hoping he would return to form as a complementary piece, but he sucked even before leaving Tampa for the last time.

Makes some sense...if it was on the street that TB was determined to sell him now, that lowers the "Price" for sure.

shockingly low return for Price. I would have traded Sardinas and Tep just for having Price in 2015 and making a legit run

Despite DallasAg's post above, the two Rangers you mentioned are NOT an equivalent offer to what they received.

I know they aren't

I'm surprised there hasn't been some news on if Rios cleared waivers or not.

I think Cotts wants to resign here, but if I was him, I sure would take a late Aug waiver trade and go to playoffs
