or maybe not, I'm not sure

As a child, I played for a select team in Memphis called the East Memphis Tigers. As little league teams go, we were incredibly coddled - 4 or 5 different uniforms (I don't remember) and we basically chose whoever we wanted for our team.

Well this team dominated the Memphis area relentlessly. I do remember travelling down to Mississippi and playing all black teams. This was the early 80's and most of us had never played or associated with anyone but whites. We typically won and won big, but I remember one game where a towering home run was hit unlike anything any of us had ever seen. Up to that point we had felt like we were unbeatable and our opponents were just fodder. That home run has always stuck with me and aftewards I came to the conclusion that we were superior only through coaching and discipline, not raw talent.

I bring that up only because I'm watching a team from Indiana play a team from Chigago and this looks very familiar to me.

Not sure how race or number of uniforms apply to the premise, but yes, coaching is important

How do you not associate with black people In a town as dark as memphis?

Coaching is very important... but, IMO, not always for the reasons one might think.

You teach a kid to love a sport... to truly love baseball, and he'll be good because the game becomes a part of who he is.

A coach who has a sterile approach will ensure a kid is fundamentally sound. After a few seasons he may or may not play long term.

I wasn't aware select ball existed in the early '80s. We played in leagues only at that time. And I played D1.

It's the same reason why well coached teams with average athletes can beat poorly coached teams with great athletes. Raw talent can only carry one so far if they do not know/understand how to utilize that talent.

You could have the same effect in Dallas. There's North Dallas and South Dallas (not to mention suburbs). Likewise, there are various parts of Memphis.
