He's been a great player and he's been great for MLB and the yankees.

But it seems like all of this is total over kill as far has the attention he's getting before games.

Not nearly as irritating as the year-long love fest for the guy who played ~40 innings per year.

It's a little nauseating, but he's got a lot of skins so I'm fine with it.

It's Jeter, it's the Yankees. The love affair started long before this year... :eyeroll:

I half expect him to get voted into the all star game next year. Ironically he'll have about as much business on it then as he has the last few years.

It's a little much to me at times, but if anybody deserves it it's him.

Breaking News:

After decades long fling with Derek Jeter, including a 9 month period where it gave it up to him in every city you can think of, MLB reported that it, too, has contracted herpes.

I doubt Ortiz gets anything close to what Jeter or Mariano got.

MJ got a awesome, spontaneous, 15 minute standing ovation during his last game from a philly crowd.

If Babe Ruth were retiring he'd get the same.

If Peyton ever announces his retirement before the season, I bet all the away fans would give him a standing o when he's introduced.

But no one cared when Mitch Richmond or Drew Bledsoe retired. Because farewell tours should be reserved for the best of the best. And Jeter isn't even close. He's a merely above average player with a long career. Only the Yankees should honor him. Or every team should give Adrian Beltre (a +4 career WAR on Jeter) a farewell tour as well.

And the Rivera thing was an even bigger joke. Its would be like every Texan opponent honoring Shane Lechler when he comes out to punt. Closing is about impactful as punting.

Jeter is 6th all time in career WAR for SS's. 46th overall.

Retiring his number now is a little over-the-top

It's a bit of hyperbole, but it's not untrue. Punters and closers have one very specific job, and if they do it well, the team probably wins. But if the team is performing well, the possibility exists that the punter or closer plays absolutely no role in the victory.

And I personally ascribe to the fireman theory: if a guy is your best relief pitcher, then he should be out there in the highest leverage and most stressful situations regardless of inning.

And now the Yankees have a Jeter uniform policy they are going with from now till the end of the season?

The patch just sounds like the Yankees cashing in even more. They're barely even pretending to be genuine now. Also sincerely laughed at New Era selling a pack of 3 Jeter hats for $150.

A comical coda for the captain's career beneath the catwalks...

On the night the Rays jump on the tribute bandwagon, Jeter takes a HBP that leads to hurt feelings, harsh words, and three Yankees being tossed.

As one of the gifts given to Jeter was a Don Zimmer jersey, I have to ask, where was the outpouring of respect for him? 60 years of baseball, and the youngest franchise in the sport was the only one who did more than put out a sound bite.
