I don't think they retaliated for Stanton getting drilled in the teeth. Obviously, hitting a guy in the face is unintentional. If a guy is going to throw at someone, he aims for the back. They drilled him back because they hit the next guy (also not intentional). That's when Go got it in the back, which was completely intentional.
FTR, I HATE the "let's warn both benches after a plunk" rule. Baseball has a history of policing itself. You hit one of our guys, we hit one of your guys, it's over. The umps, historically, have a history of being terrible at policing players. Call guys out or safe. That's their job. It's not to wonder if a HBP was intentional or not. Just like it's not their job to determine if a catcher got run over enough to call the runner out. In this case, Gomez, and his teammates, accepted the HBP as part of the game and simply jogged to first base. No one argued or came onto the field. They knew it was coming and accepted it. The arguments and invasion came after the ump tossed the Miami pitcher. It's a dumb rule, and I wish they would change it. **** Bud Selig.
