Not at all, I knew him in college and he was so roided up it was ridiculous. He looked like The Rock swinging a tee ball bat, he was so huge.

But in his defense it is absolutely insane how prevalent adderall is in locker rooms. It's way more utilized than steroids are/were.

I mean we also had a pitcher that would touch 99 on some days and sit 92-93 others.. No one was surprised when he got arrested in the spring for having a bunch of liquor and gear in his car.

He had an adderall exemption last year and forgot to renew it.

I don't think that was likely how it went down...

This statement:
quote:
"I made a mistake by taking Adderall. I had permission to use it in the past, but do not have a therapeutic use exemption this year. I accept my punishment and will begin serving my suspension immediately."

Indicates "in the past" under the "therapeutic use exemption." We don't know when that was.

Much of the details about the "therapeutic use exemption" came out with A-Rod, who was actually approved repeatedly.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/early-lead/wp/2014/07/03/a-rod-received-exemption-by-mlb-to-use-peds-new-book-claims/

If I recall, up until something like 2008, almost 30% of MLB had been approved for some sort of therapeutic use exemption. It declined shortly there after. Today? Who knows...

quote:
Smith was removed as the supervisor of MLB's drug program in 2012 after the MLB Players Association protested that he made exemptions too difficult to obtain. He is in charge of the minor-league program, in which the MLBPA has no say.

I have no idea whether MLB is any more clean or less clean.

There was no doubt he was among the MANY still using.

He had an exemption but its now come out he didn't renew it last year either. Guy has ADD, man...I just can't believe he's used that to hit so many home runs.#soulcrushed?

If one gets an exemption I'd think it would be important enough to be a forever type of thing. It's not like you cure your ADD.

They should just allow Adderral for anyone who receives it from a Dr prescription.

I actually commend him for owning it and apologizing right away. I'm sick of these guys' ridiculous justifications and excuses... Welker trying to say he was "drugged" at the Derby? Oh shut up, nobody drugged you. What an embarrassing and pathetic story.

And then of course there's Ryan Braun. I hope that scumbag gets his someday.

How exactly does adderall help your baseball game? I understand it helps you focus but it clearly wasn't making him a better player this year given his batting average.

ADD is myth.

LOTS of players use Adderal. Lots of students use Adderal.

IMO, there shouldn't be any exemptions. A player shouldn't be allowed to find an exemption for HGH or Testosterone or anything else.

Either the substance is banned or it isn't. If it helps performance, then either everyone or noone should be allowed to use it.

Why should Chris Davis be allowed to use Adderal because he was able to convince a Dr he has ADD, when Player X would benefit from Adderal just as much as Davis, but can't make the same convincing argument.

If "ADD" is so debilitating that he needs to use it... then MLB should not be his career. David Segui tried to get an exception for Testosterone, in order to have a surgery. The Dr indicated with his Testosterone levels, he would not perform the surgery. Segui had to make the decision for surgery or MLB. He said he never felt younger taking the banned substance and walked away from MLB. (Or so I recall of he said on ESPN in response to being in the Mitchell Report).

I'm not sure we have a timeline of when he used. His BA in September shows quite the turnaround.

My guess is... he was denied use of Adderal for the season before it started. He went most of the season without using it and his numbers reflect that.

He probably thought he'd take a chance with the playoffs ahead to go ahead and start using... that he'd be able to get away with it for a couple months and lead his team to post-season greatness.

Didn't work.

One other point... I had heard once, but never hear it... I thought in the initial drug punishment that players were subject to one failed test without recourse (no team notification or anything)... 2nd offense was 25 games.

And last point... if MLB wants to use an exemption, then it should be disclosed publicly. IMO, it affects the integrity of the game to have someone like Davis go from a guy the Rangers had pretty much given up on, to a guy who hits 53HRs batting .286. Maybe the Rangers gave up on him, cause they new he was a user and didn't want this to happen to them. Just like Nellie last year.

I guess I don't mind sharing this information.

Taking an Adderall is like taking a shot of adrenaline. It's a long, long season. Sometimes it's hard to get up for a game after weeks and weeks of almost non stop traveling and playing. You take an adderall and suddenly not only are you ready to go, you're ready to run through a wall. That stuff got passed around like tylenol in the locker room.

Is your arm hurting? Take an adderall and the pain is gone... and it makes you throw harder. At least it did for me. When I'd bat, the ball looked like a beach ball instead of an aspirin like it normally did. You're so much more focused in. I thought it absolutely gave me an edge when hitting.

It really is a little miracle drug for baseball players. And believe me, it is rampant in the big leagues. So many of these guys have "ADHD," it's a joke.

Since then I have changed my stance on Adderall and a lot of Rx drugs... But that's a different conversation for another board.

I had no idea. I know some people who take it for all night study sessions but outside Tejada last year I had never heard of it being used in sports. It makes sense now why it's banned.

Seems like if it's that effective it needs to be removed from the exemptions list. You can find people on campus who know a doctor that will hand out prescriptions of it, I can't imagine how easy it is for a professional athlete to find a doctor.

It's incredibly easy. It's also a job that most agents are tasked with. They have doctors on speed dial that can and are willing to write those prescriptions, no problem.

I'm very curious to know what happened with Davis and why he didn't get the exemption again.

I've often suspected that with most agents being a lawyer, that anything they do with their client is privileged and thus someone like Boras lines all that stuff up.

He gets that great big contract... then they stop using during the contract to keep from getting caught...

From what I read he hasn't even applied for the exemption in a few years. Sounded like he had it early with Texas.

Its pretty common policy in sports leagues throughout the world.

Lionel Messi took steroids. No one cares, because he has growth hormone deficiency.

Sports have nearly universally, just like many other organizations, companies, etc... adopted a policy that we recognize people have health issues and many drugs that are best for rehabilitation, prevention, etc... of those health issues have some other nice affects as far as athletes, or lawyers trying to bill 2200 hours in a year, or whoever are concerned.

If you disagree with that policy, than fine. Whatever. But there's nothing else to talk about, just like there's nothing else to talk about regarding Adderall if you're starting under the presumption that ADD is a myth.

My understanding is like others in here- he had an exemption earlier in his career. For some reason, he doesn't have it anymore but still was taking Adderall at least sometimes and he got caught. Sucks, but maybe deserved.

I'm pretty sure Adderall is probably not behind some of his seasons in Baltimore, as he's obviously been taking it this season where he can't hit .200 and surely took it back when he had some bad seasons with the Rangers.

I don't know anything about him taking steroids or not.

I'm not exactly sure I follow the David Sequi story. I will say he was in his late 30s and had been a marginal bench player for several seasons when he, says you, so benevolently walked away from Major League Baseball.

Segui was interviewed by ESPN... in response to claims he was exposed by Grimsley. Here is just a link I found, but having read... just wanted to make sure you have a reference for what I'm talking about.

http://grg51.typepad.com/steroid_nation/2007/11/ex-mlb-player-d.html

In the interview I saw... apparently IIRC, Grimsley either came to him or recommended someone see him, about HGH.

He indicated he was under a Dr care and it should be used unless under care.

He admitted having used PEDs and he indicated that he was posed with either having a surgery and losing eligibility or to keep playing. He indicated he did not want to quit using them because they made him feel so young... and thus left MLB.

That is all.

Regarding... ADD... I don't deny Adderall and the affect... or what it "remedies." What I dispute is... the diagnosis of ADD\ADHD.

Do you know how they diagnose it? It is a joke. Medicating someone for "ADD" turns them into a zombie.

A child who is diagnosed with ADD and is medicated, is often done because the child will not conform to a public school environment because they won't sit still and quietly while an incompetent unengaging teacher drones on and on and on...

That isn't to say some kids are difficult to keep their attention, or that their mind doesn't drift off. We used to call that being creative and having an imagination. But that is not tolerated in most public schools.

As a 33 year old just now about to graduate from college, I can tell you ADD exists. I can show someone my grades and show them the times I was actually on my medicine. I take vyvanse. Semesters with my meds were A's and B's and the rest were C's or worse with the occasional B. Show me a Chris Davis strikeout spree and I'll show you a missed dosage

To be fair, nearly everyone's grades would improve while taking Adderall.

We know guys hit more HRs on PEDs. That doesn't declare them as deficient in testosterone.

Caffeine is a controlled substance in some sports (college swimming, from what I understand). I've never heard someone say they were defficient in Caffeine.

This:

From what I understand, Adderall is becoming huge issue in education.

Noone disputes what Adderall does.
