I hate the Yankees, and never cared too much for Jeter, probably because he's a Yankee. But you have to be trying really hard not to at least respect Derek Jeter.

Really neat spot.

As a fellow 40-year-old, it's tough to see him go, as it means that the guys who came into the league at the time I was a 21-year-old or so are all just about gone from the game - but that's life.

Privileged to see Jeter play twice - at New Comiskey in 1996, and in 2008 when a bunch of uswent to see one game at Yankee Stadium before they moved to the new digs.

To grasp just how long ago that 1996 game was, I looked up the Yankees' starting 9 that day: Jeter, Wade Boggs, Paul O'Neil, Cecil Fielder, Tino Martinez, Bernie WIlliams, Jim Leyritz, Darryl Strawberry and Andy Petitte.

Jeter hit a HR that day, and Mariano Rivera got the save. It is staggering to think that Jeter played on the same team as Strawberry, Boggs and the older Fielder.

True reality check came the other day when I was looking at the astros roster. I remember as a kid seeing biggio, Bagwell etc all born in the 60's....... Now it's rare to find one in the 70's

Are you kidding me? What a beast.

I know it's popular the last couple days for dbags like Olbermann to swim upstream and call the guy overrated. But baseball is better with guys like Jeter in the game. He'll be missed.

I will miss him.

When a rival team finally stops featuring a 40 year old that's an average hitter and below average fielder, it's a sad day for any team and fan.

Meh. Mostly indifferent to Jeter himself. Tired of everything around him.

While I've always generally liked Jeter, he is the definition of overrated and this ode to all things Jeter this year has been a lot to swallow.

That being said, I wish there were a lot more Derek Jeter's in professional baseball.

I think it all depends on how you classify things. By all reports, he's a world class teammate, team captain, and face for a franchise, not to mention his ability to perform in the clutch. Sure there were better hitters, faster guys, and better infielders in baseball history.

That being said:
  • top 10 in MVP voting 8 times
  • 5 gold gloves
  • 5 silver sluggers
  • top 10 in BA 10 times (career .309 hitter, .308 in the post season)
  • 6th all time in hits
  • 10th all time in runs
  • 30th all time in SS fielding percentage
  • 5x world champion

Not to mention handling NYC and that crazy sports media for 20 years.

He's pretty good.

Jeter's fielding is overrated. However, outside of that, I don't really see it.

No one has ever said, with any seriousness, at least, that he is Babe Ruth reborn. I think most realize some guys did this or that better than he did.

Still, even for the stat and sabremetric junkies, Jeter's ability to do a lot of things pretty well in combination, is going to see him retire with the 20th best offense WAR of all-time and the 58th best overall WAR of all time. (Again, his defense is overrated.)

I think he's a good example that baseball, as much as we've tried to turn it into a game played on an excel sheet, is still a human game played by humans with human emotions and if Derek Jeter has captured the nation's minds and admiration in a way he's near-idolized, then good for him. I don't see anything wrong with that and it doesn't make him overrated.

Does he deserve to be "the guy" who gets voted in unanimously? I don't think so, but I don't read a whole lot into the discussion regarding him getting in unanimously as I think those clamoring for Jeter's unanimity would be clamoring for a number of other's unanimity.
