A runner who doesn't touch a base and then leaves the field is out
quote:tehcnically his hands were able to touch the base, but thats not the intention of that rule.
Is it legal in MLB to slide outside of baseline and past the base? I can't imagine that it is, but announcers never said a word about the legality of the slide.

So all season it has seemed like the neighborhood play has been upheld and protected by MLB for safety reasons. They just decided to go against what they've done all year in a playoff game on a play that was dirty?

Utley needs to be suspended and if not I hope Harvey sends a heater up near his dome.

People comparing it to the Kang takeout and it's not even close -- Utley didn't start his slide until he was basically at the bag. He may as well ran to 2nd base and then kicked his legs from 2nd base.

A batter is out when --
(m) A preceding runner shall, in the umpire's judgment, intentionally interfere with a fielder who is attempting to catch a thrown ball or to throw a ball in an attempt to complete any play:
Rule 6.05(m) Comment: The objective of this rule is to penalize the offensive team for deliberate, unwarranted, unsportsmanlike action by the runner in leaving the baseline for the obvious purpose of crashing the pivot man on a double play, rather than trying to reach the base. Obviously this is an umpire's judgment play.
