It was ****ing garbage all the way around. Great precedent to set MLB.

Runner was called out, so I imagine that allows him to leave the field of play without penalty.

Dirty ass slide though.

Is it legal in MLB to slide outside of baseline and past the base? I can't imagine that it is, but announcers never said a word about the legality of the slide.

Odor thinks Utley's slide was too much

tehcnically his hands were able to touch the base, but thats not the intention of that rule.
He should be suspended, and if not, they should drill him

How would he be out? No force and no tag.

The MLB replay rules allow the replay official to "place" runners, and it is reasonable to assert that he left the field because he was called out. Once the out call was corrected, there was no issue here rules wise.

The issue is MLB's refusal to take intentional contact like this out of the game. Dirty or not, the rule should be interference, dead ball, out, and ejected. Must be a direct slide into the bag, otherwise must attempt to avoid contact. Contrary to what some would assert, taking out a middle infielder or a catcher is NOT part of the game. Its like fighting in hockey: if its part of the game, why is it outlawed at lower levels?

Hey come on man. Fighting in hockey is how the players police the game. If you take a run at a teams star player then you know that you are going to have to answer for it. Ehh it will probably be out of the game soon.

That slide by Utley was dirty. No question about it.

So all season it has seemed like the neighborhood play has been upheld and protected by MLB for safety reasons. They just decided to go against what they've done all year in a playoff game on a play that was dirty?

The neighborhood play assumes you have control of the ball in the middle of turning the play. I think they got that part right; Tejada was still fielding the ball when his foot was stabbing for the bag. But that slide most definitely was interference. I expect MLB to amend the take out slide rule or ask the umpires to enforce it next year ala the Buster Posey play from 2013.

Napoli had a slide in Game 2 (or maybe it was 1) that was somewhat similar that I thought was a bit dirty.

But that was 10x worse. People comparing it to the Kang takeout and it's not even close -- Utley didn't start his slide until he was basically at the bag. He may as well ran to 2nd base and then kicked his legs from 2nd base.

Ultimately didn't make a difference IMO though. Tejada wasn't going to turn it, and he missed touching 2nd base.

But if Utley doesn't get thrown at, the Mets have no backbone.

What I was going to say. The stupid neighborhood play strikes again. Seems like no one touches second turning the DP, but when you fail to complete (due to slide, Val mismanagement or what have you) then the force out doesn't count with the neighborhood? GTFO. I say touch the base like tur supposed to. Screw this neighborhood BS. A lot of other infielders I'm sure meant to touch their respective base but didn't resulting in runners being called safe.

HS Federation rules state a runner sliding into second cannot make contact with a fielder behind the bag. If so both runner and batter runner are out, results in a double play.

Thank you. Pirates fans need to watch this slide if they want to cry about a dirty play, which this absolutely was. Coghlan's slide into Kang was a good baseball play. It's just unfortunate that he got hurt.

Obviously this is an umpire's judgment play.

They need to be suspending when not injuring a player in the playoffs. Also, need to be calling him out by the ump.

This is my opinion on the modern way of breaking up double plays in general.

It's not part of the game. It's not part of the game at youth levels because its ****ing dangerous. Just like it wasn't ever allowed when I played as a kid to go plowing over some 12 year old catcher at the plate. It's only part of the game at the professional levels because macho culture allowed that kind of hard nosed bending of the rules until they break. Can a runner run over the third baseman as he's fielding a ground ball if he's in the baseline to break up a ground ball out? Hell no. A runner should have to slide to attempt to be safe and avoid contact with a fielder making a play or else its interference and everybody is out. That's baseball. It would also eventually allow the umpires to get rid of the neighborhood nonsense and call the play at the second base bag correctly without interpretation as well.

Gregorius had a similar slide against the Astros. Did not start slide until even with the bag and took out Altuve. Luckily no injury. I am not against playing hard, but MLB should protect the players.
