He's a no for me. Just not near enough of a body of work.

I think just Rollie and Eck, right? And Eck started for a decent portion of his career

The 9th inning closer is a relatively new development to baseball and hence I think the voters are still trying to determine what should be considered a HoF worthy career. There are currently five players in Cooperstown who were voted in primarily due or their accomplishments as relief pitchers: Hoyt Wilhelm, Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley, Bruce Sutter & Goose Gossage.

He's among the best closers to ever play...top 5-10 IMO.

Just depends on if the HOF voter opinions have changed much on how they view closers.

But he's not as good as Trevor Hoffman or Mo Rivera. 400 saves is a nice bar to set, but it doesn't carry the auto-bid that 3000 hits, 300 wins, or 500 HRs have. If we want to set an autobid number, 500 would make more sense.

Hoffman and Wagner are pretty much equivalent in my book except for longer term compiling by Hoffman. They even have an identical number of all-star game appearances. Neither one as good as Rivera.

I posted this in the other thread.

I find it funny so far yall are saying Hoffman is in, but Wagner is not. Sure Hoffman has more saves, but that has a lot to do with having more opportunities. I would say Wagner compares pretty favorable to Hoffman.

Career ERA
Wagner - 2.31
Hoffman - 2.87

WHIP
Wagner - 0.998
Hoffman - 1.058

Opp AVG
Wagner - .184
Hoffman - .208

Record
Wagner 47-40 (54%)
Hoffman 61-75 (45%)

Career WAR
Wagner - 24.2 (1.613 per year)
Hoffman - 26.1 (1.450 per year)

Saves (per year)
Wagner - 28.13
Hoffman - 33.39

Both are 7x All Stars even though Wagner played 3 fewer years.

Here is a few more stats. To me it is not hard to argue that Wagner is the 2nd best closer ever. Easily top 5 at worst. Now its just about how you value closers and if they should be in the HOF.

Player-Saves-BwnSaves-Save%-ERA
Rivera - 652 - 80 -89.1% - 2.21
Hoffman - 601 - 76 - 88.8% - 2.87
Smith - 478 - 103 - 82.3% - 3.03
Franco - 424 - 101 - 80.8% - 2.89
Wagner - 422 - 69 - 85.9% - 2.31
Eckersley - 390 - 71 - 84.6% - 3.50
Rodrguez - 386 - 65 - 85.6% - 2.69
Nathan - 377 - 45 - 89.3% - 2.89
Reardon - 367 - 106 - 77.6% - 3.16
Percival - 358 - 57 - 86.3% - 3.17
Papelbon - 349 - 46 - 88.4% - 2.35

Travis Hafner is probably a top 5 DH all-time. Better make room for him in cooperstown...

I know that comment was tongue in cheek, but the top 4 DHs are/will be in the Hall of Fame.

1. Edgar Martinez
2. David Ortiz
3. Frank Thomas
4. Jim Thome

Then it is a toss up to the 5th. I'd say Harold Baines.

for closers when it comes to the Hall of Fame...it's all about the postseason.

you don't get into the hall as a closer for being great on a random summer night vs. the Marlins.

he was awful and I mean awful for the astros in the playoffs. Check the numbers. He gave up 14 earned runs in 11 innings pitched.

I think Chipper Jones just hit another one over the Crawford Boxes

billy got to the post season four times with the Astros. 5 ERs. 4.2 IPs.

I think you're looking at his all time stats. Yes, they're not good.

I'm a no on all closers with the exception of Mariano Rivera and I'm not even sure I would vote for him.
