They just pulled him without giving up a hit. He only threw 100 pitches.

He had a chance at history. What a ***** move by the Dodger manager.

I remember Wash letting Yu throw 128 pitches in his first start of the year against the Astros a few years back while chasing a perfect game.

Should have let him go on but rookie manager gonna rookie manage

It's still a close game, it's his first ever start, and he's coming off TJ surgery.

Stupid manager being a little *****. Chance to be the only player since the ****ing 1800s to throw a no hitter in his debut. Especially since the last call was actually a strike.

I hate to see it, but the kid is coming off Tommy John surgery.

The GM and front office made that call

He'll never have a chance at that again. His arm is warm, he's still dealing, pitch counts are stupid IMO, and now he won't even get a decision because they just gave up a 2 run homer.

Two years ago. And the baseball gods just slapped Dave Roberts in the face, reminding him not to mess with history.

I cannot believe that just happened.

Now he just got ejected. I loved him when he played, but he just lost his mind.

I doubt it was Robert's call. I'm sure a pitch count was part of the plan before the game. Strip will have other big nights and pitch in much bigger games.

Can someone scientifically explain pitch counts to me?

I know it's not the same, but I routinely threw over 12( pitches in high school and magically my arm never fell off.

Why is 100 the magic number?
Buck Compton

True, he will. But he had a chance to be the only player to do it in 110 years. That's rare air and you let him go until a hit or walks consecutive people.

Then he brings in a reliever who puts it on a tee.

Because people are dumb. 100 curve balls is different than 100 fastballs is different from 100 change ups. Just like pitching in low stress situations or from the wind up is different from the stretch with the bases jacked.

Strip didn't look like he had lost a lot, and deserved to try to get a ground ball at least.

I'm a Dodgers fan and I would've loved to see an Aggie make history wearing Dodger Blue. I'm not a big believer in pitch counts, and if it were my call, I would've left him in. All I'm saying is that it's hard to criticize the team for making a really unpopular decision because they believe it's in the player's long term best interest.
Buck Compton

I think they almost made it BECAUSE it was an unpopular decision. Washington did a bunch of that **** with Strasburg too. His surgery was literally over two calendar years ago. They stuck to their guns just to say they did, when pitch counts are a worthless stat. Just feel bad for Ross, especially now that the decision gave him an earned run and cost him the decision.

Pretty sure that type of decision got made when he made the roster as the 5th starter, not tonight in the bottom of the 8th.
Buck Compton

Oh I'm sure it was. That's what makes it worse. Just because you went into something with a plan, doesn't mean you stick to it no matter what. Not having the flexibility or the judgement as leaders to adapt says something about their (lack of) management skills.

I see it every day in business, but sports have generally been an area where managers and coaches are flexible. Oh well, it's over. Sucks for Ross and it'll be funny when the dodgers lose.

I'm pretty sure the Astros broke that up, if I am remembering correctly.

Yes. Marwin Gonzalez ripped one up the middle as the 27th batter to break it up and Wash immediately pulled Yu.

After the game Yu was mad bc he felt he should have fielded that ball to finish it

That about sums it up folks. Hilarious all the crazies on here who think Roberts is an idiot. He HAS to take care of Ross in that situation. Lesson to learn: if you wanna throw a no no be more aggressive in the zone and throw less pitches. Sorry it was a hard lesson to learn last night.

You honestly think Dave Roberts looked at the bench coach and said, "Hey, let's piss off the fans. Watch this"

It was the right move. 100 pitches can easily turn in 110, 120, etc. with a couple of long at bats.

Yep, it's a TEAM sport, a long season, and hopefully a very long career. I admire a guy that has the cajones to do what Roberts did knowing he's going to take a dumptruck full of **** for it.
