Pujols contract is sucking them dry and they have the worst farm system according to MLB people.

That's not possible. We've been told the Angels TV contract makes their payroll cap non-existing.

It isn't just Pujols... Hamilton is killing them, as well.

Pujols (36): .194 BA, .266 OBP, 7 HR
$25M (2016); $26M (2017); $27M (2018); $28M (2019); $29M (2020); $30M (2021)

Hamilton: .000 BA, 0 HRs
$28.4M (2016); $28.4M (2017)

Trout's contract will be brutal starting in 2018. Then, it is $34.1M for each of the next 3 seasons.

That's a big chunk of change for one player.

Halos are at $164M, and have a need for two SPs right now.

You have to wonder if the long-term of Pujols' contract is a bigger issue than the short-term.

$61M from 2018-2010 for Pujols and Trout.

I detailed in another thread about their SP prospects. Their system is trash with little if any cheap help.

I would give the Astros entire Triple A Team for Trout.

No one is saying they have endless money, just it's hard if not impossible to imagine their solution will be to trade Mike Trout.

We'd have to pay someone to take Gomez. Then he'll promptly turn into a .280-.300 hitter again.

Kinda sucks for Trout. Here we are in year 6, and he's won a total of 0 playoff games. Hopefully the Halos move him don't waste a majority of his good years.

The Astros will need a new CF soon...

I'm just pissed we have given up half our farm talent for a bunch of rentals who are either no longer here or added any value to the team this year. Kazmir, Fiers, Gomez, Giles...

The Rangers have the prospects and I'd hope they'd do it in a heartbeat. You don't get a chance for potentially all-time great players often.

the Pujols contract has been a disaster. As many posters said at the time. Father time is still undefeated

There is no way the Angels are trading Trout.

Can't let one player handicap the future of your franchise. It will be a business decision

He's not the one handicapping the franchise.

That'd be more some of the other contracts, which will start to dissipate this coming offseason once CJ Wilson's and Jered Weaver's both end. Both make over $20 million.

Then Hamilton's ~25 million come off the books after next season.

The Pujols contract is a problem but trading Mike Trout won't erase that contract. Trading Trout for a bunch of prospects won't help in the near-term, trading for veterans right now would be a waste.

So, I would suspect they bite the bullet these next two years after which they'll have at least $100 million to spend on the roster even though they have to pay Pujols and Trout.

If I'm the Angels, I'm rebuilding around him. Young, paid reasonably for several more years. Too many prospects don't pan out - "can't miss" doesn't exist. And established MLB players don't bring the value he does. They'd be nuts to trade him.

Baseball Reference's most-similar players through age 23:

Mickey Mantle
Frank Robinson
Ken Griffey
Hank Aaron

Even if it seemed like the wise choice, I feel like stories of Babe Ruth being traded by Boston would scare away a franchise from trading him.

I don't follow MLB that closely so forgive the dumb question: what's CJ's status with the Angels? Didn't exactly get their money's worth with him either.

What if the Rangers offered to accept Hamilton's full contract and a few prospects in return for Trout. 1) would that get him and 2) would it be a good trade? (I know -- depends on who, but I don't know who they have; so mention and analyze). Of course, the problem with this is that it gets the Angels out of a huge hole or at least lets them float a little higher.

CJ Wilson will be a free agent after this season. He's been making $20 million a year and no, they didn't get their money's worth.

They would like to get out of the Hamilton contract I'm sure but it's over after next season so getting rid of it would not help them but in short term.

And if they thought they could compete in the short term, why would they trade their best player for prospects?

because they aren't competing with him and the only way to improve your organization is to trade him and boost your farm system

There isn't really a precedent for a trade like this, is there? Trout's early career numbers suggest he'll be one of the greatest to ever play. There will be someone out there willing to shovel over their best talent for him let's just hope it's a NL team.

I'd send Bregman, Reed, Tucker, and Cameron for him without batting an eye.

The Angels are 16-21, and just lost their starting SS (Simmons). They replaced him with Brendan Ryan, whom they were able to get for Cash and PTBNL.

Summary for the TL DR crowd - The Halos will have 2 legit SPs for 2017 on their roster and they have nobody I can project to be a #5 SP for 2017 in their minors. They need 3.

They have too many holes to fill, not enough prospects and a payroll that can't absorb FAs.

They can fill the 3 spots by any of the following:
1) Promoting a prospect that is unsuccessful in their minors in 2016 <- Very little pickings.
2) Sign FAs like Lincecum and Chacin and Lohse for small money $2-5M?
3) Sign $$$ FAs <- You won't get a SP for less than $10M?
4) Trade for SPs <- If you don't have prospects, you don't have much to offer in trade (other than Trout)

--------------------------------------------------

Supporting information.

They recently lost Garrett Richards to TJ surgery. Now on the DL60
CJ Wilson is on the DL60.
Closer Huston Street is on the DL15, as is Craig Gentry.

They have the following financial commits:
2016: $165M
2017: $92.7M => For Pujols, Trout, Simmons, Street & Pennington (Option for Escobar)
2018: $73.1M => For ONLY Pujols, Trout, & Simmons (Option for Street)
2019: $75.1M => For ONLY Pujols, Trout and Simmons
They do have Serf and Arbs.

Let's just focus on pitching, for now.
Carry forward from 2016
Santiago (28|LHP|A3): 8 GS \ 50.0 IP \ 3.42 ERA \ 1.16 WHIP \ 39 K
Tropeano (25|RHP|Serf): 7 GS \ 36.2 IP \ 3.69 ERA \ 1.64 WHIP \ 39 K
Shoemaker (29|RHP|A1 in 2017): 6 GS \ 24.2 IP \ 9.12 ERA \ 1.91 WHIP \ 17 K

Others in 2017
Richards: A3 in 2017. Will miss much of season coming back from TJ
Heaney (24|LHP): DL60/Serf; 1 GS
Rasmus (28|RHP): A1; 1 GS, 10 RP - 5.59 ERA \ 1.40 WHIP

Loses for 2017
Weaver: FA
Wilson: FA
Chacin (28|RHP): FA

If you assume they stay at $165M for 2017... you've got about $72M to add players for your roster.

Here are their Top 30 Prospects

Here was their rotation in AAA:
Yunesky Maya (34-RHP): 5 GS \ 24.1 IP \ 5.92 ERA \ 2.01 WHIP
Kyle Kendrick (31-RHP): 5 GS \ 28.2 IP \ 4.40 ERA \ 1.15 WHIP
Chris Jones (27-LHP): 7 GS \ 35.0 IP \ 6.43 ERA \ 1.66 WHIP
Zach Nuding (26-RHP): 7 GS \ 33.2 IP \ 7.75 ERA \ 1.90 WHIP
Nate Smith (24-LHP): 7 GS \ 40.2 IP \ 3.54 ERA \ 1.16 WHIP

There is a reason they've gone out and gotten Chacin and are on the verge of signing Lincecum. If you have a 34 year old holding down AAA with a 5.92 ERA... you've got depth problems. You have one prospect hope for 2017 - Nate Smith.

Here we are in AA:
Weller (26-RHP): 7 GS \ 39.0 IP \ 3.92 ERA \ 1.15 WHIP
Blackford (25-RHP): 5 GS \ 24.1 IP \ 1.85 ERA \ 1.03 WHIP
McGowin (24-RHP): 5 GS \ 25.2 IP \ 4.56 ERA \ 1.21 WHIP <- Promoted to AAA (5th Rd in 2013)
Kipper (23-RHP): 7 GS \ 41.0 IP \ 4.61 ERA \ 1.37 WHIP; 9th Rd pick 2014 out of TCU.
Alcantara (23-RHP): 7 GS \ 32.0 IP \ 4.50 ERA \ 1.56 WHIP; Intl from DR.

Nobody in AA is helping you in 2017. Probably not 2018, either.

Heard that the Sox are looking at this. And, quite frankly, it makes total sense for them considering that this is Papi's last season...

They'll have money to spend and I am certain that Trout's agent has discussed the value of East Coast bias on the hall of fame ballot.

That and the soxs have the young talent and farm system to make it work

I don't think Trout is going to need any bias to get into the Hall of Fame.

I'd have no issue dealing AAA and AA players (maybe not pitchers - they need help there). Minus Papi the rest of the starting 9 is pretty young. It would be beneficial to both teams and the players that would be dealt. The Sox outfield is currently pretty stacked so they'd be able to move one of them as well. It would likely be Brock Holt who is an immediate value because of his versatility.

Is this just all just sports talk radio fan speculation or are there real sources saying the Angels are shopping him?

I haven't heard or seen anything so I'm guessing it's the former?
