Like the Yankees, Sox fans will support the team when the team is worthy of support. It's called voting with their wallet. (Although I'm not referring to the elite of the elite seats - I can't stand that crap - but I don't blame fans for the ineptitude of their management. I leave that ridiculous concept to you).

I agree...I really wish they wouldn't have done that. They still have their team history, but it seems that all of their lore went down with Old Yankees Stadium. Incredibly shortsighted by the ownership.

I visited Fenway last week, and what an experience. Boston fans are truly lucky to have that history and stadium. Makes me really jealous LOL.

"We'll support the team when it's worthy of support" is really just another way of saying the fans only care about the team when it's doing well... Fair-weather.

Not saying that is really a bad thing... it's just like most other fanbases... just don't go turning around and claiming "Boston/NewYork/Wherever are the best fans in baseball!" when things pick up.

The funny thing about this is that you won't find fans of these teams as the ones saying it. You may see media say it. Also financially supporting and caring aren't the same thing.

Why should the fans of a team come out in droves when the product is crap? I know that, as Aggies, we tend to be more lenient on the expectations of success on the field and the general definition of "supporting" our team (in football at least).

In the professional ranks, I view being vocal about the direction the team is going isn't being a fair weather fan. We can agree to disagree with this if you'd like. And I also think there is a huge difference between being a fair weather fan (as you'd call it) and a bandwagon fan.

Yankee fans aren't going to wear a different hat just because the team isn't any good. But the ticket prices aren't going down either. Why would it be expected for them to shell out 500 bucks for a family of 4 to go see a team in the basement?

And, I do admit that my view of Yankee fans has considerably changed since 2004. Even Jeter acknowledged that phenomena.

And whoopity doo da, a much better Rangers Rangers team is within 7,000 average home attendance?

DFW has 7 million, NYC has 20 million.


But NYC has 2 teams...so split it down the middle and it's 10 million for the Yankees and 7 million for the Rangers.

And suddenly the attendance difference becomes almost nothing.
