I'm coaching a middle school baseball team, and while the easy part is done (going undefeated in the regular season and winning the division), the real season begins tomorrow as we host a one game semifinal to determine who goes to the city championship.

This isn't much of a conversation starter, just a humble brag post about how proud I am of my guys.

But if you want to discuss something, feel free to debate the merits of starting or not starting your #1 pitcher in the semifinal.

Congrats.

One of my boys is hoping totry out for his MS baseball team. I've been told by many that unless he is already a year-round baseball player, there is little chance he'll make the team.

What's the level of play on your team?

Ours is TAPPS. Starts in 7th grade.

We're in Florida. We've got ages from old 11 to young 15.

I think there's only one or two of the 19 on the roster who don't play some level of travel ball. Every other weekend they're off at some tournament.

I'd say our talent level is pretty good. By virtue of winning the division, we've already established ourselves as one of the four best teams, out of 24 middle schools in the district.

As far as your boy goes, the fact that a player is on a travel squad isn't enough on its own to mean he's got a better shot of making a team. The benefit is having more coaching and more playing/practicing time.

For me personally, I always like to keep an eye out for the yessir - never quit - hustler kid. Attitude is important.

NEVER play for tomorrow. Yes, you start you #1 in the semi. Now, if you jump way ahead early and can pull him, you could have him for relief in the final. Hopefully, you have a serviceable #3 & #4 that can help.

If your school doesn't have football, then you can play MS baseball in the fall

As a coach, I'd look and see what their pitcher is doing. Do you have a #2 that matches up well against theirs? Also if they're on game changer then I'd check their spray chart against your similar handed #1 & #2 and then go from there. Got to get to the championship game to win it.

our private school started a MS team 6 years ago and played in the local PONY program (14U PONY)

I know some public schools are now offering MS baseball in the central Texas area

We gambled a little bit and went with our #2 starter, and he combined with our #1 reliever to throw a 4 hit shutout. It was a 5-0 final, but it was never comfortably over until the last out. Everybody contributed and made plays when called upon. Our starting CF (later the closer) threw out a runner at the plate to end one inning, and later on our 3B somehow got hit in the face by a cleat on an attempted SB, but still held on to the ball to record the out. He looks like Tyrion Lannister now. Only one XBH hit on the offensive side, but a bunch of singles strung together got the job done.

Championship game Wednesday night.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains. Sadly, we had to put one in the L column. We went with our two fastball pitchers, and they combined to allow just 6 hits; unfortunately they had control issues all night and had several wild pitches and walks. Behind them, our normally sure handed defense committed more errors in the one game than they'd had in the entire season.

We had 8 hits of our own, but only once did we string enough together to push some guys across the plate. As the night went on, it felt more and more like one of *those* games, where every hit we had found a glove, and every one they had found a way not to be caught.

Final was 3-9. Without the errors, it would have been 3-2.

Yep, fastball only gets killed by age 12, need a good change and great control, 66 - 75% strikes. You only get errors when they put the ball in play.

I was pitching coach and threw batting practice. It's easy to emulate pitchers and I knew them all by the last year of Little League. Batters at that age can pick up everything other than speed changes quickly.

Great season though. Good job!

Yeah, they were at about 45% on strikes.

Inexplicably, it was error after error; twice (three times if you're a stickler) we had two on the same play.

Plus our season long issue with leaving men on base. I'd be surprised if we had a game where we had fewer than 10 LOB, and last night was no different.

To be fair, most kids that age were lucky to stay above 50%. Those kids aren't pitching any more though.

Have lost the championship games the majority of the time. That's baseball. You had to be good to get there.
