My son will be starting 14U in the fall. What is the typical drop allowed? -5? -3?

Don't want to spend a lot on -5 if a majority of the games only allow -3...

TIA

Most select leagues only allow a drop 3. the league he's playing in should publish that.

EDIT - forgot that some tournaments have different rules. HIGH SCHOOLS in Texas only allow a drop 3. My son was a big kid who always swung a low drop anyway.

Thanks wbt.

The team he will likely play for does alot of different tournaments (Super Series, USSSA, etc.). I suppose I could research those organizations and see what they usually allow.

He started 13U using a -8, then moved to a -5 for the last couple of tournaments. He's smaller in size but he seemed to handle the -5 with no problem. I just don't know if he'll be ready for a -3 by the fall.

Looks like I need to get him working with a heavier bat. My friends warned me about the 13/14U transition, now I'm living it...

Follow the NFHS rules and stick with a -3 bat.

Expect wood bat tourneys and get a Marucci Pro Model Albert Pujols too. Don't fret over bat and glove prices, it's a tiny fraction. Our 14 year old has the Marucci and a Rawlings Big Stick loaner, the popular Easton model all 32" drop 3's and a 33" Combat drop 3.

He loves the pop of the Marucci and the Combat, but day in, day out the Easton wins overall.

Ours went from a Little League field and a drop 12 bat to a full sized field and drop 3 in July of 8th grade. By the end of the summer he didn't even notice. They adjust quicker than you think.

it was fun when we played -7 at that age and -5 at the higher level with hot tpx bats

Agree with others at that age get a drop -3 BBCOR bat, he will have to use it as a HS freshman.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'm going to just get a -3 BBCOR and start working him with it. Sooner is better than later I suppose.
