So my roommates and I are planning a last minute trip for the Rangers/Cubs game on July 16th and doing it the most college way possible (driving up or getting cheapest flight and cheapest safe hotel). Couple questions for those that have done Wrigley as a trip before:

What's the best way to get tickets? Online secondary market or better to scalp?

Best area to stay that connects to transit/uber?

Can't miss things to do in/around the stadium?

How much time should we budget to get to either airport if we decide to fly out after the game?

Thanks in advance!

I'll be there July 15!

Stubhub or the day of with scalpers you can easily find tickets.

Wrigley is directly on the redline. That travels to the downtown and river north/ magnificent Mile area. Tons of hotels, although they won't be the cheapest. But I'd recommend that simply for the convenience and ample things to do. You could also look at Airbnb. Any place in Chicago has access to Lyft or Uber. I have used hoteltonight with pretty good luck for relatively cheap options.

When you get to the stadium you find a bar and drink. There about 1000 of them around the stadium. My favorite spot pre game is Murphys, which is directly behind centerfield. But again, tons of option.

Don't leave after the game.... Go back out to the bars and enjoy the scene. On a Saturday afternoon it will be packed and fun.

Addison station on the red line directly serves Wrigley Field and I feel like taking the 'L' is part of the Wrigley experience.

Eat at Lucky's just a couple blocks from Wrigley before the game. Party at Cubby Bear after.

Stay as close to Wrigleyville as possible. I went for the Texans/Bears game a couple years ago and had an absolute blast in Chicago. Plan on eating nothing but pizza for the duration of your stay.

Absolutely take the L. It's so much easier and it's a cool experience. Lucky's is great as is Goose Island. Both are a block or two away on Addison. The Cubby Bear is a cool bar at the corner of Addison and Clark across from the marquee. I like to hit Murphy's out behind CF after the game for beers but Harry Caray's is a cool stop as well. I haven't tried to scalp outside Wrigley for years but last I remember it was pretty well regulated by cops, unlike here in Texas where it is wide open. As far as food goes, Giordano's is good for deep dish but Lou Malnati's and Gino's are way better IMO. You can probably find a great mom & pop type place in most neighborhood as well. Just ask a local. You also need to get an Italian beef (and a Chicago dog & Polish sausage). Portillo's is a big chain up there that is fantastic. They are all over. But again, you can probably find several small joints that serve a great beef too. And have yourself an Old Style while you are there. It's not a great beer at all, but it's our beer. Not unlike Lone Star here in Texas.

Oh, if you're looking for bleacher seats I have two for all night & weekend games. Mine are up on StubHub but I'd cut you a deal if we go around SH and their exorbitant fees.

My buddy & I bumped into him once after a game and mistakenly asked to take pictures with him. We stopped in a little diner a block away to eat and a few minutes later Ronnie came walking in and sat at our table. To be fair he never asked us for money or to buy him anything (the waiter gave him free Coke) but he talked non-stop for what seemed like 4 hours but was probably closer to 30 minutes. It was quite the experience.

How does Ronnie get season tix? Does the team give them to him?

Also, he looks better now that his dentures have been in place.

I think a lot of times the gate attendants just let him in. I know sometimes people give him tickets.

The wife and I went to Chicago to watch the Cubs/Astros about 4 years ago when both teams were pretty chitty. We went with the intention of getting a ticket from a scalper. We checked the Wrigley box office first to get a gauge on ticket prices and seats available, and then went to talk to scalpers in hopes to get a better deal. We ended up paying about the same as the box office, but we got what we felt were better seats (we were actually 1 row behind Ronnie, posted above).

Just a thought and something to expect...you're going to a game at Wrigley Field. We learned quickly, even when the Cubs were chitty, that tickets are in demand and people from all over the world come to Chicago to go to Wrigley. Getting great deals like you'd find outside of The Ballpark or MM most likely won't happen. Scalpers know that if you don't buy their ticket, one of the thousands of people talking to other scalpers looking for tickets will. This will probably be multiplied since the Cubs are actually a decent team this year. Think of it as going to a game at Green Bay. You're paying for the experience as well. All-in-all, I think we paid about $60/ticket to a scalper, but had decent seats.

As others have said, you must take the red line into Wrigley. There's really no other way to get there that would give you the true experience. Also, while the Cubs are up 14 on the Rangers, grab a beer and go out to the patio and enjoy the Chicago skyline.

Everyone gets to go on the field for batting practice, right? Or was that a special deal?

Thanks again, Junkhead!!
