Numerous trips to KC back during 2000-2004 when I lived in Denver. Here are the things I enjoyed:
1. Baseball - KC Royals used to be cheap but I think they have a new stadium now.
2. Football - A&M Maroon Out is NOTHING compared to Red Friday in KC. Trust me on this. You've got to see it to believe it.
3. BBQ - There's a lot of good BBQ in KC but there's a lot of overrated and bad BBQ in KC. Kind of like how there's a lot of live music in Austin. That doesn't mean that you're going to like every band you hear.
4. The Plaza - lots of good restaurants around here. Pay close attention to the parking restrictions because they will ticket you.
5. Harry S. Truman Museum and Library in Independence, MO. I liked it. I've been to about 6 of the Presidential Libraries so I go in for this kind of stuff. A lot of people don't realize that he was the one who gave the order to drop the bombs on Japan. And he was the one who was President when Korea started. Worth a look.
6. The "Riverboat" Casinos - worth a look. Kind of entertaining. I'm a Poker player and it's funny to play in different places and see what kinds of odd local rules there are. When I played at Ameristar, you could only buy $250 worth of chips every few hours. That was your "Missouri Loss Limit".
7. Negro League Baseball Hall of Fame - I ran out of time on my last trip to KC so I didn't get to do this. I'm a baseball guy so I think this would have been very interesting.
8. There is a Ford Truck Plant there, I don't know if they give tours. That might be interesting.
Other food, there are a few good restaurants around town. Some local chains are well known. One of the favorites for pizza was called Minsky's (or something like that). You can Google them - assuming they're still around.
One last thing, safety. There are parts of KC that you'll want to avoid. East out Raytown Road was a good area to avoid as I recall.
EDIT: Sorry, just re-read your post and see that it's this week so no Royals and no Chiefs.
