Multnomah Whiskey Library. Get there right when it opens.

I second this. Even if you have to wait, the 'waiting bar' downstairs is cool, too.

Other Food

  • Broder Cafe - Swedish Food
  • Tusk - Middle Eastern Food (Seasonal Menu)
  • Lardo - Unique Sandwiches (went here many times; solid local beer too)
  • Canard - French Food

FWIW, I wasn't a fan of Han Oak. If you're a fan of traditional Korean food, you might be disappointed. Their menu is blander and more Western friendly. But it may be a good introduction to Korean food, albeit pricey.

Noteworthy Coffee Joints

  • Coava (my favorite)
  • Upper Left Roasters
  • Spella Caffe
  • Stumptown (the big local chain, but very good for a chain)

What time of year?

We live in PDX. Wife is a big foodie. Are you staying in the city or venturing out to Hood, Gorge, coast or wine country?

City:
  • Multnomah Whiskey Library mentioned above is cool, but I'd swap it for Scotch Lodge today.
  • Lardo mentioned above blows. Overpriced and they're going out of business left and right. Only one left now.
  • Any of the McMenamins will be standard fare. Nothing special, but the Rock Creek Tavern is f'ing awesome location.
  • Unique to PDX and worth it: Coquine, Kachka, St. Jack, Langbaan, Eem, Jacqueline (best restaurant in town, fight me) and Kaan
  • Our favorite weekly drivers (all in the west hills / Nob Hill / Pearl where we live): Mucca Osteria, Fire Side, Grassa and Love Shack.
  • It's in a mall, but Din Tai Fung is life.
  • PDX pizza game is on point: Lovely's (from Chef's Table on Netflix) and Ken's (dude who wrote the famous bread book "Flour Water Salt Yeast").
  • The only MUST: Lauretta Jeans. They've been closed/limited open/closed/now full open, but across the street is Ava Gene's. Super good if you can get a ressy. Then walk across the street for pie at Lauretta's.

But really, get out of Portland:

  • Amaterra: winery near us in the hills - good food, decent wine, good view of the valley
  • Land at PDX and head straight to Sugarpine in Troutdale on the Sandy River. BBQ and ice cream.
  • Here in the summer, go to Top Wire Hop Project (food carts in the middle of a hops farm). All the beer they serve is made from their hops. https://www.topwirehp.com/
  • Go to Cannon and get an entire dungeness crab from Ecola market.
  • Go to Timberline, eat at Cascade/Rams head. Sip some fancy wine on a volcano. Charlie's in Govt. Camp is my favorite place on earth. ****ty bar food, but it's where the daughter and I eat after skiing. Just the place she chose for us as the usual.
  • Hood River / Cascade Locks: Thunder Island brewery (view of God's Bridge from the patio) / pFriem/Ferment on the waterfront. Grateful Vineyard has good pizza and awesome Hood views. https://www.gratefulvineyards.com/

Again, get out of Portland.

Great stuff. Labor Day week. Flying into Portland and staying downtown for 1 night.

Then heading to Cannon Beach area for 2 days. Rest of the week is in McMinnville. Any recommendations in all that area is welcome as well!!

Nice.

Certainly hit Ecola Seafood Market mentioned above in CB. The crab is true boat-to-table same day. Crepes across the street!

Public Coast and Pelican (meh) are the two breweries in town. You might be just a tad early, but Public Coast owns a farm off 26 towards Cannon from Portland: https://publiccoastbrewing.com/public-coast-farm/ . Munch on u-pick blueberries with an IPA! Cannon Beach Hardware store is a fun "screw and brew" and somehow the vegan go-to for some reason.

Little Yellow house is FANTASTIC if you can get a ressy.

You owe it to yourself to drive from CB to Manzanita. It has some of the most scenic sections of the 101. On the way you'll pass both Arcadia and Oswald State parks. Both home to some of the last old growth in OR: https://www.lucascometto.com/cascadia-oregon?srsltid=AfmBOoq40j7MryV2kHBMyL3pX4U5PfX8RNe1LUneSstBnnw0jaoldNjk

For Oswald, make sure to hike it all the way to Short Sand beach / Smuggler's Cove. Seriously, it's a must. And I guess now that I'm fully of topic, Ecola State Park overlook before leaving CB.

Once in Manzanita, San Dunes is the place. Then hit Tillamook Creamery on the way back to Portland!

I hope you enjoy!

We don't spend a ton of time in wine country. We've been to Mac Market with some friends and it's a fun food hall. Red Hills Market is awesome (hit it on a bike ride once a year for cider donuts).

I will say, avoid Stoller at all costs. It's where all families and their dog (including us) go for wine. It's 99.9% families with hellions running around the lawn and tire swing. It's awesome for us!
